Really think people need to get a grip when it comes to religion, why shouldn't it be included if thats what people want? There are loads of religious people and it is their right to hold those beliefs. If you don't want religion in your game then don't add/build a church, mosque, temple etc. I am not religious myself but don't see the problem in including it for those who are.
This is how I feel. While I know nothing about game coding, I've played Sims 1, 2 and 3 a lot, as well as other games, and all of them are dependent on options that have to be coded into the game. Why couldn't they add the possibility for religion, for those who want it, and not enforce it upon those who aren't interested?
I liked the Jacoban and Peteran religions in Sims Medieval and felt it worked fairly well. I could see myself using these functions in game. I've made a church building for weddings in the past and recently I experimented with career mods and got the Preacher and Monk/Nun careers from Mod the Sims. I've used them a little in appropriate worlds.
I know that there's always the risk of offending someone by including something they don't want, but clearly there are people who have the opposing view, so I'm wondering why the naysayers are more "valued" than the ones who would like religion in the game? We could just as well say the same about all the Supernatural content, when some people are against witchcraft, yet EA has put witches in Sims 1, Sims 2, Sims 3 AND Sims Medieval. Some people probably hate aliens, yet we got them in 2 and 3. In Sims 2 we had them in the base game, and in Sims 3 they came with one of the most high profile EPs (Seasons).
I understand that EA is probably trying to save themselves some grief by not offending the atheist brigade, or by getting religion "wrong" and thus offending some demonination or other, but to me this is a case of political correctness going overboard...again.
When I was a kid, schools in the UK were Christian by default and we had to go to assemblies with guests from the local churches, read/listen to Bible stories and sing hymns, unless our parents opted us out on the basis of an alternative religion, particularly in first and middle school. While my family was never particularly religious and didn't go to church, having Christian-based assemblies was normal. We even learned a bit about a couple of other faiths as we got a bit older.
In my childhood, Christianity was a cultural framework in the UK and most people were fine with that. However, with the onset of political correctness and multi-culturalism, I get the impression that the focus has changed a lot and even Nativity plays are much less common, because of all the different faiths coming into the country. But to be honest, several of the major holidays we have in the UK are based around religious festivals i.e. Christmas, Easter, though it can be argued that even they are based on older pre-Christian faiths. Sims 3 has watered down versions of these events in Egg Hunts and Gift Giving Festivals so I don't see why religion itself is such a problem!
