Moving Mods folder

I am trying to free up space on my daughter’s laptop. To do the the latest Sims update I moved the mods folder to the D drive, usually once the update is complete there’s just enough space to move the Mods folder back…. Not this time. I’ve watched and read a lot of guides about setting up a symbolic link to the moved Mods folder but it keeps saying the folder already exists. The folder was originally moved but cut and paste I’ve deleted the empty mods folder from the existing location (as it reappeared after I opened the game) so I am out of ideas and now stuck. Any advice welcome.  Also would a mod manager help get the size of the mod folder down? And what is a good a safe mod manager download?

  • r58hgzkm6882  This command is creating the symlink itself.  The "file already exists" error means there's already a file or folder in the location where the system is trying to create the symlink, so in this case there's a Sims 4 folder in Documents > Electronic Arts  Rename this folder to get around the error.

However, you need to link this Sims 4 folder to another folder called "The Sims 4," not to another folder, as in, the symlink needs to match the folder it's pointing to.  So either move the entire Sims 4 folder to D, or only create the symlink for the Mods folder, like this:

    MKLINK /J "C:\Users\username\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Mods "D:\Back up\Mods"

You'll notice I referenced the folder on D as Mods rather than Mods July 2025.  That renming is necessary, as described above.  You'll also notice my command is a bit different than yours.  Here's the guide we use:

Thanks both I really appreciate the feedback.

Just on the symlink message.  I can’t identify what file is the issue. The C:drive has all the Sims folders and I moved the mods folder and even renamed it to the D:drive. I’m using the following command

    cmd /c mklink  /d “C:\users\user name\documents\electronic arts\the sims 4” “D:\Back up\Mods July 2025”

and I still get the “Cannot create a file when that file already exists”

Is it suggesting the the folders Back up -Mods July 2025 also exists in the C:drive?

  • r58hgzkm6882  The "folder already exists" error is because there's already a "The Sims 4" folder where you're telling Command Prompt to create the symlink.  The system won't allow two files or folders with exactly the same name in the same location.  So move or rename that folder, the one in Documents > Electronic Arts, and try creating the symlink again.

  • The Mods folder has to be in the user folder that the game sees:

Some mod managers can help with seeing what a mod is before deleting. Personally, when I'm wanting to delete some custom content (furniture, building items, hair, clothes, makeup -- anything that is in a catalog), I use Sims 4 Studio because it's easy to see exactly what I'm deleting.

Otherwise, my advice is for her to just go through the mods and delete everything that's listed broken in Previously Broken mods and CC and Broken & Updated Mods & CC (just for a quick start), and then everything she's not actually using but downloaded in case she might someday. Another option is just to delete and start over, downloading only what she's in need of at the time, not stuff she might want later.
