As the age old saying goes if it ain't broke don't break it. I have been playing the sims 4 on xbox since release and never had any issues with the controls aside from the occasional bug before this update. I will try to be as constructive as possible but honestly these changes feel so out of touch from what we have been asking for as console players that I genuinely cannot fathom why EA have decided to do it.
The new controls are clunky and difficult to use as I play with a controller and not a mouse and keyboard because its my preferred playstyle until now. The cursor is a terrible way to navigate as the sensitivity is way different to a mouse and is not as feasible with a joystick. Build mode is absolutely ruined. You cannot activate half the controls because it was always designed with the close menu option so you could have a finer level of adjustment. Some of the completely broken aspects of build mode are:
- Advanced roofing controls
- Free rotation
- Undo/Redo
- Item pack filtering in the buy menu
- Half the screen being taken up by the catalogue which is beyond frustrating.
- Lt and Rt being completely unusable as they bring up the search menu
All of these were accessible with the build menu closed and it worked perfectly fine. If EA actually put some thought into their updates instead of chucking out useless fundamental changes to the playstyle and actually listened to fans they wouldn't be in this mess. A simple way they could fix this and make the game usable again is to simply allow the player to switch to the older playstyle whilst they fix their broken mess of a patch and let the player decide which playstyle works for them.
If I wanted a mouse and keyboard experience, I would play on PC. Although I do recognise that some console players do play with mouse and keyboard in which case I would suggest having separate button mapping for either play style with keyboard and mouse feeling more like the true PC experience. At the end of the day, its hard not too look at this patch as being made by someone who has clearly never touched a controller in their life. Absolute shambles.
