Re: Sims 4 running slowly on Mac

Hi @galexandrakis,

Let's see if we can find out what's going on 🙂

You mention sometimes it works fine and sometimes it runs slowly. Do you know if there's anything specific that happens when it runs slowly? For example, could you try to open the game while you don't have any other applications open or just after restarting your computer?

Could you explain what goes slowly? For example, are your Sims taking more time than usual to complete what you ask them to?

Thanks!
-Mai

  • Yes, I always open the game when no other applications are open because I want it to run as fast as it can.

    As for what goes slowly, generally the game lags a lot more, even in low graphics mode. These are under the same conditions when the game goes faster. I have a few mods and a little cc but like I said it works fine sometimes. Also, I suppose my Sims do take longer to start tasks (the bubble with the task doesn't descend into the active zone).

    Hi @galexandrakis,

    One of the times it's running slow, could you try to create a new save game from the Main menu and see if it makes a difference? If not, could you restart your computer and see if just after restarting it it runs better?

    Could you tell us which macOs you have installed in the computer? Fully updated High Sierra?

    Thanks!
    -Mai
  • Yes, I will do that and let you know as soon as it happens again. As far as OS, I am running High Sierra, yes.

    Thanks!

    Thank you @galexandrakis, that would be helpful. We will be here whenever you have the opportunity to test 🙂

  • Ok! I tested it. It seems as though it is the whole game running slowly, regardless of the save game I am using. I hope there is a way to remedy this!

    Thanks! 🙂

    Hello there, @galexandrakis

    There's kinda low wiggle room here as to what you can do to fix your game, so I messily copied down a few things you can try. Hope this helps!

    Do you have any mods or CC downloaded? This could be the problem with your game running slowly.

    Play in windowed mode, as this is known to reduce lag.

    The Sims is often known not to work on High Sierra, the best thing you can do is contact customer support.

    Could your computer have too much storage? Sometimes this can affect gameplay. Same goes for old computers.

    Try switching to 32-bit mode.

    Untick Online features and share user data in the options menu.

    Make sure that you lower the storage TS4 is taking up, it looks like the problem. You need at least 10GB for TS4. (9 for the game and 1 additional GB.)

    Please provide your RAM in this forum as well.

    Happy simming!

  • Thanks a bunch, I will definitely try all of these. I have 16GB of RAM. How do I change the amount the Sims takes up?

    Hi @galexandrakis,

    Did you also have the opportunity to test if the game runs the same if you open it just after restarting your computer?

    16GB of RAM is more than enough to run TS4, as long as you don't have other applications running at the same time.
    I believe what @Spxcebuns meant when telling you you need more than 10GB was that you needed that free space in your hard drive. So to make sure the game has enough, just take a look to your available free space. Is your hard drive almost full?

    @Spxcebuns

    I'm sorry but your advice is irrelevant and incorrect for several reasons:

    The Sims is often known not to work on High Sierra, the best thing you can do is contact customer support. - Absolute rubbish, it runs fine on High Sierra and is supported. That is not a troubleshooting answer. The reason is something else.

    Try switching to 32-bit mode. - not an option in macOS. Please make sure you are familiar with operating systems and games before giving advice.

    Make sure that you lower the storage TS4 is taking up, it looks like the problem - you cannot lower the amount of storage a game needs for installation.

    @galexandrakis

    The operating system manages RAM for you and as @EA_Mai has stated, 16Gb RAM is plenty. Unless you have a ton of memory hogging apps open on your Mac all at the same time this is not the issue. Do check the storage available on your Mac by clicking on the Apple in the menu bar then About This Mac then Storage.

    Can you please disable Origin in-game and see if that helps? Also turn off all notifications in Origin.

  • I did and it didn't change for some reason. And yes I have 73GB left in my hard drive.

    @galexandrakis

    Ok. Can you please create a new user account on your Mac and play a brand new, clean game with no saves in that account?
