Crashing when putting a pet up for adoption

My game keeps freezing and then completely closing when the NPC turns up to pick up a cat I tried to put up for adoption in-game. I did lose progress but eventually tried to do it again - the game crashed again (maybe it's karma lol). But any potential thoughts to stop this from happening?

Amberboo3 Does this happen in a different household in the same save, or in a different save? Does it happen with no mods or custom content present?

An alternative would be to add a sim to your main household, then split the sim and pet into a different household. Use money cheats if necessary.
