Game immediately crashes after launching

For the past few days, the game has been crashing on the initial loading screen after launch, and I've been struggling to find a solution. 😭

I've tried launching with and without mods, running ea as admin, uninstalling and reinstalling the game, clearing cache in the ea app, steam, and game files, as well as all of the other popular fixes I could find.

It hasn't given me an error message or anything, the game just stops running. I'd appreciate any tips or ideas. 🙂

  • moonbbeams  If you have any files inside ConfigOverride, in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4, please delete them.

Otherwise, please uninstall your current versions of the 2015 and newer VC++ runtimes, and install fresh copies.  Hit Windows key-i, select Apps, scroll down to the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables, click on any version from 2015 or later, and select Uninstall.  Don't touch the older versions.  You can download the newest runtimes directly from Microsoft:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-US/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist?view=msvc-170

You'll need both the x86 and x64 versions of the 2015-2022 runtimes, but you can skip the ARM version, which is for a different class of device.  Restart your computer after installing and before trying to play.

If that doesn't help either, force the game to launch in DirectX 11 mode.  Open the EA App, click Sims 4 > Manage > View properties, and add -dx11 to the command line box.

Did everything here and it's still not working 🤕

  • moonbbeams  Are you still testing with no mods or custom content present?  If not, please try that again, now that you've made a couple of changes.

If that doesn't or didn't help, please run a couple of basic checks of your Windows system files:

    • Hit Windows key-X
    • Choose either “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Windows Terminal (Administrator),” whichever option is offered
    • Inside the window that appears, copy and paste “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” without quotes, and enter
    • The system will start validating soon. If it throws an error, please list it here
    • After it reaches 100%, hit Windows key-X again
    • Again, choose “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Windows Terminal (Administrator)”
    • Inside the window, copy and paste “sfc /scannow” without quotes, and enter
    • Post the message you receive here

Restart your computer, hit Windows key-i, select Update & Security, and click the box to check for updates.  If any install, restart again afterwards.

Try again to play, and if you get another crash, please look for new errors in the Reliability Monitor.  Hit Windows key-R and enter "perfmon /rel" without quotes, and you'll see a chart of errors and updates with a column for each day.  Today is on the right.

Look for an error that happened at exactly the time of your most recent Sims 4 crash.  If you find one, double-click it to see more details, then copy that info and paste it into a reply here.  If you don't see a new error, check back in an hour or so—the Reliability Monitor doesn't always update right away.

moonbbeams  This is another VC++ runtime error, but since you already uninstalled and reinstalled the runtimes, the problem is likely elsewhere.  Try installing the newest graphics driver from Intel:

    https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/232153/intel-core-i51335u-processor-12m-cache-up-to-4-60-ghz/downloads.html

Run it as an admin: right-click the download and select "Run as administrator."  Restart your computer after installing and before trying to play.

If you get the same error, one that mentions VCRUNTIME140.dll like the one above, I think it's time for a repair install of Windows.  Here's how (option two):

    https://www.elevenforum.com/t/repair-install-windows-11-with-an-in-place-upgrade.418/

This shouldn't delete any of your data, but if you get to step 14 and are NOT asked to keep personal files and apps, back out and start over.

If you get a different error, please post the related info (like you did with this last one) before going straight to the repair install.  Or you can try it anyway; it won't do any damage when performed correctly.
