Game is Crashing Before it Reaches Main Menu

Complete re-install, no mods, fresh Electronic Arts Folder.

I've completely deleted the Electronic Arts folder. No saves, no data, no mods, nothing. When I click the Sims 4, it creates a brand spanking new folder... and still crashes.

I at one point got a memory error, so I ran through my startup programs, disabled a bunch of things, killed a few processes, restarted my laptop, watched my memory, and it hit a MAX of 60% before Sims 4 crashed again, so didn't even hit the max memory. It never hits the main menu.

I have updated my NVIDIA drivers.

CurseForge doesn't even see the game anymore, so I don't think it's that, either.

I'm at a loss on what to do next. I did also do a Repair from Oigins at one point, I've done several restarts... what's the next step?

Edit: I think I did the DxDiag.txt correctly.

Edit x2: I did more. I suddenly was able to get the game up and running, so when I was able to confirm that, I tried to slowly put my mods back into the game. A few script mods seemed to be causing issues, I removed those, the game started running again. I tried re-using curse forge and that started causing major issues. I tried restarting to sort things out and stripped mods out entirely, and then my laptop updated.

Now everything's REALLY broken.

All of a sudden, Curse has zero access to the mod folder, which I know is not the point of this post, but it's all related. I cannot modify the permissions on the mods folder- or any Sims 4 folder within the documents area of my laptop- at all. Period.

I tried deleting the entire folder again, all mods/saves/screenshots/whatever, and nope. We're back to square zero. I have uploaded what I think is a newer DxDiag, but I officially have no idea what is going on. The game just doesn't want to run.

I'm so confused. I decided to do another run after opening up this ticket and already spending like ~2 hours working on this, and it suddenly... runs????? I didn't do ANYTHING new. Literally nothing. I'm not sure if I should close this ticket or not. I'm going to give it a minute and test run the game and see if it keeps running before I close the ticket, but I wish i had answers. I did do another pass on my windows updater, so I don't know if that triggered something behind the scenes? I think the only thing I did between the last run and this one was run the DxDiag

  • Darkovika  Let me know if you need more help.  In that case, I'd also like to know whether the Sims 4 user folder is currently inside the OneDrive folder.  That could cause the issue you've described: OneDrive struggles to sync your data and locks up access to the folder in the process.  Then it resolves and you can play again.  Here's how to find the full path to the user folder:

    https://sims4.crinrict.com/eng/2018/07/how-to-find-your-user-folder/

A Windows update could have fixed some underlying issue as well.  And it is of course also possible that turning your computer off and on again is what fixed the issue.

  • k1rbyheart  Please try playing in a clean user folder.  Move the entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop.  When you launch the game, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  (Your saves and other content will be intact in the folder you've moved but temporarily unread by the game.)  Don't add anything to the new folder yet; just start a new save and see how it runs.

If you get another crash, please provide a dxdiag.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.

i did that and it works but i dont have any of my saves now😭

  • k1rbyheart  Your saves are in the folder you moved, and you can move them to the new Sims 4 folder now if you want.  But test your mods and custom content first, and remove anything that prevents the game from working properly.  If you have a lot of mods and cc to sort through, the 50/50 method can make the process much more efficient:

    https://modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Finding_Problem_Custom_Content#The_50.25_Method

Once you've done that, move over the contents of the saves and Tray (saved households and builds) folders, plus Screenshots and Recorded Videos if you care about those.  The rest can be discarded.
