Game is loading slow

When I first got the game, it only took like 10 seconds at most to load. But now, it takes five minutes. So I deleted my sims 4 folder and tried it again, and it works as it should. But when I put it back in again, the game went back to being slow. It's not my mods: I don't have too many of them and I tried removing them. It didn't work.

Can someone please help me here?

  • @eclecticallyem  You might need to do a bit of experimenting to figure out what the problem is.  Remove your Sims 4 folder from Documents\Electronic Arts again, and load the game to create a new folder.  Start a new save (no need to spend much time on it; this is just for testing), place the sim in a house somewhere, save, quit. and restart your computer.  Then, without adding anything else to the new Sims 4 folder, launch the game again, just to make sure it still loads as quickly as it did before.  If loading is slow again, stop here and let me know.

Otherwise, you can try adding your existing content to the new folder, a little at a time.  It's best to use copy and paste, not drag and drop—that way, you'll have the original files and folders as backup, and you can freely experiment on the copies.  Start by copying the contents of Tray from your old folder to your new one, and see whether ti makes a difference.  Then you can add the contents of Mods, and test again.  If there's anything else besides your saves, add that next; leave your old saves for last.

Let me know whether any files cause the game to load slowly again.  If some do, you can remove the entire batch you just added, test to make sure the game loads quickly again, and then add half of the batch that caused the issue.  If the slow loading is back, split that half in half and test again.  If half the batch doesn't affect load times, then test half of the other half.  This way, you can narrow down the source of the issue fairly quickly, even with a large number of files.

@puzzlezaddict i tried your idea and apparently its one of options, userdata.lock, gameversion, config, clientDB, Usersetting. But those files are automatically generated whenever I start the game.

@eclecticallyem  It shouldn't be any of those files: some are just output (as in, the game writes to them but doesn't read them), and none cause problems under normal circumstances.  What happened when you started with a clean folder, created a new save, quit, and reloaded: was loading fast again, or was it just as slow as it's been (or somewhere in between)?

Please also run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.

@eclecticallyem  The driver for your graphics chip is almost three years old, and there are a few errors in your dxdiag that are probably related to the driver.  You can download a new one from Intel here:

    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/29465/Intel-Graphics-Windows-10-DCH-Drivers?product=95442

It may help to repair the game in Origin: open your game library, right-click on the Sims 4 icon, and select Repair.

Please also make sure that OneDrive isn't automatically syncing the contents of Documents with cloud storage.  You can disable OneDrive entirely, or just prevent it from auto syncing Documents.

@eclecticallyem  If your graphics chip is having issues, then yes, lowering the in-game settings can help.  However, the errors in your dxdiag are more likely to be related to the driver, the software that instructs your computer on how to use the graphics processing unit.

A driver can become corrupt and not work properly, or it can be outdated and not work properly, and in either case, it's not a question of adjusting the settings—the driver simply needs to be replaced.  In your case, this should be simple, as Intel has recently released a new driver for your graphics chip.

I should have mentioned it before, but be sure to restart your computer after installing the new driver, as is best practice whenever installing a driver.

@eclecticallyem  Did you check OneDrive's settings?  If that's not the issue, please disable any aniivirus/firewall you have, and test.  (Remember to reenable it when you're done.)

If that doesn't help either, please try playing while your computer is not connected to the internet, as in, disable wifi and/or pull the ethernet cable.  You can sign into Origin and put it in offline mode, then take your computer completely offline.
