stevanya Windows Defender is reasonably good these days, certainly as good as if not better than any free service. And it's more than good enough for regular use, i.e. a home user who doesn't take risks like downloading sketchy software.
For subscription services, I don't have a great idea of what good options might be, but I can say that Norton and McAfee routinely cause problems, so my (relatively mild) suggestion would be to avoid those. Beyond that, I woud take advantage of the free trials most services offer to make sure they don't conflict with any software you're running, and pick one that isn't too expensive and doesn't have a pile of bad reviews. Reddit is a good place to look for red flags, since the user base will complain about anything and everything.
