game will not start at all

as the title says, my game won’t start. i have deleted and reinstalled twice, with no solution. my game is on an external HDD which posed no issues until recently. i do typically play with mods, though i took my mods folder out and didn’t put it back in after the reinstall, and it still won’t start. i play on steam, and so when i press play, it just gets stuck on “playing”, and when i tell it to stop, it gets stuck on “stopping”.

When you launch the game, if it launches, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  (Your saves and other content will be intact in the folder you've moved but temporarily unread by the game.)  Don't add anything to the new folder yet; just start a new save and see how it runs, that is if you can get that far.

If you still can't play, please provide a dxdiag.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.
