Hair glitching when I have Edge Smoothing turned off

Hi. I upgraded to a PowerSpec G525 Gaming PC a few days ago. I play TS4 with DX11. My AMD graphics are up to date.

After downloading TS4 I've been experiencing graphics issues I have never had before. One of the biggest issues is that when I have edge smoothing turned off in CAS my Sim's hair will start glitching. Pixels flash wildly in and out (making it hard to take screenshots of the issue). It doesn't happen as often if I'm fully zoomed out.

This will happen even if I have zero CC or mods installed. I did think this issue was caused by CC nails at first because it would happen every time I would apply them, but even after I took all of my mods out and did a full reinstall of my game this is still happening. It wasn't happening on my last computer.

Possibly related, I've also noticed that when I zoom out in live-mode clothing will have weird lines around seams in the mesh (I can share photos if necessary, but I'm not sure if it's related to my main problem at all since it happens even with Edge Smoothing on). This wasn't happening on my last computer.

Any ideas what this could be from and how I can fix it? I don't want to turn edge smoothing on since I'd like to download Reshade eventually.

Attached are screenshots of what it looks like when the pixels flash out.

  • unforgivinggirl  Is there an Edge Smoothing or Anti-aliasing setting within the AMD Adrenalin software?  I don't have an AMD GPU to test with, so I can't tell you exactly where the setting should be, but it shouldn't be too hard to find if it's there.  Please let me know whether enabling this helps.

Please also provide a dxdiag, for reference.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.

In the advanced settings of the Default graphics I was able to find: Anti-aliasing (set to "use application settings"), Anti-Aliasing Method (set to "multisampling"), and Morphological Anti-Aliasing (set to "disabled"). I don't see any option to turn off the first two at all unless "use application settings" considers "edge smoothing: off" a call to disable anti-aliasing.

I'll test the different settings on these and get back to you if it fixes the issue.

  • unforgivinggirl  The "use application setting" option means that the Adrenalin software is deferring to the app in question, so in this case not applying Edge Smoothing because it's off within Sims 4.  If you can, choose Sims 4 (TS4_x64.exe) and change its settings only, rather than applying the settings across the board.  Choose "override the application setting" or similar and then play with the other settings.

Separately, are you getting BlueScreens while playing Sims 4?  I see a few in your dxdiag, but the file doesn't provide any context, and the BSOD codes aren't specific enough to tell me exactly what's wrong or how to fix it.  So if you want to troubleshoot these as well, more context would be helpful.

Yes, the AMD software allows me to adjust settings for each specific game so I'm only messing with the settings for TS4.

Unfortunately, changing the Anti-Aliasing settings hasn't worked at all. I've tried each version of the settings and still am experiencing the pixels glitching out in CAS. Here's a list from the AMD site on the Anti-Aliasing settings. Maybe you can see something I don't that might fix the issue.

Additionally, I haven't BlueScreened while playing the game at all. A day or two after I turned on the PC, though, it BlueScreened while I was watching a YouTube video on Firefox. Totally unrelated to TS4. I rolled back an optional update I'd installed earlier in the day (some kind of preview for Windows 11, if I recall correctly) and it seems like that nipped that problem in the bud as it hasn't happened again. I couldn't tell you why it happened in the first place, unfortunately, as I was doing nothing differently than what I normally do on my computer.

I've attached a screenshot of the specific hair I'm using to test this as well, although it happens with more than just this one.

  • unforgivinggirl  If you've tried everything in the anti-aliasing category, then the only other setting that looks (to me) like it might help is Radeon Image Sharpening.

Separately, have you confirmed that this issue goes away if you enable Edge Smoothing in the game, AND that with Edge Smoothing off, this happens in both fullscreen and windowed modes?  I'd also be curious to see screenshots of the live mode effects, and to know whether they're only present with Edge Smoothing disabled and in both fullscreen and windowed modes.

Turning the Image Sharpening on does nothing to help the glitch.

The issue persists in all three display types and only goes away if Edge Smoothing is turned on. The hair glitching is only viewable in CAS. I've tested zooming in and out in Live Mode with Edge Smoothing off and nothing happens there.

The Live Mode lines around clothes I'd mentioned previously happen mostly with CC, but I do see it on EA clothes sometimes, just not nearly as noticeably. The closer I am to the Sim the seams will sort of vanish, then the further I zoom out the more noticeable they become. I'd chalk it all up to the CC the Sims are wearing if not for the fact that these are the same CC files that I had on my last computer and I never experienced this using it—all I did was move them to an external hard drive and then onto this new PC. My previous computer did use an NVIDIA graphics card, so I'm just assuming this is an issue on my end now as an AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT user.

Attached are short 30 second clips of the issue in CAS and Live Mode. I've also included screenshots of my current AMD settings.

  • unforgivinggirl  The issue in live mode looks like what typically happens with Edge Smoothing disabled.  The seams may simply reflect the way some items are made.  I don't know that there's a workaround if the Adrenalin settings don't fix it.

I haven't seen the CAS issue, at least not recently, and it shouldn't be happening.  I could guess that Maxis assumes that high-end GPUs will have Edge Smoothing enabled and therefore may not be looking at this particular context, but still, that's not a good excuse.  If I do see other examples, I'll merge them into this thread, but I can tell you right now that one report will almost certainly go nowhere.

Have you tried playing in DirectX 9 mode?  You shouldn't need to, but it's still a viable alternative, and your hardware doesn't need the performance gains from DX11 mode.  Aside from enabling Edge Smoothing, I don't think there's another way to solve this.  I also don't know enough about ReShade to say whether there's a way to make it work with Edge Smoothing enabled, but that's worth looking into as well.
