Help! Game crashes nonstop. long info
(Forgive me if I happened to post this elsewhere. If this somehow shows up in another section, please delete it!)
As the title says, I’m completely desperate and close to giving up. I’ve tried everything I can think of, but The Sims 4 keeps crashing — and I still can’t figure out why. I’ve combed through forum threads, followed every suggestion I could find, and nothing has helped.
Here’s what I’ve done so far:
- Factory reset: I fully wiped and reset my PC (for unrelated issues too), then reinstalled The Sims 4 fresh — no mods, clean download. Crash. Reinstalled mods later? Still crashed.
- Cleared EA App cache: Wiped all cache. No difference.
- Game repair: Renamed my Sims 4 folder to “OLD” so a new one would generate post-repair. Still no luck.
- System specs & updates:
- GPU: RTX 4070 SUPER
- CPU: Intel Core i9-14900KF
- RAM: 32 GB
- All drivers and BIOS fully updated
- NVIDIA settings: Tweaked control panel to force the game to use the dedicated GPU with Ultra Performance.
- Tested new save: No mods, fresh household, totally new save. Still crashes within 10–20 minutes.
- 50/50 mod test: Tried removing all mods and adding them back in small batches. Crashes happen regardless — even when running without any mods. This one took the longest because the game crashes after 10–20 minutes before I can even rotate through all mods.
The game used to run perfectly — until that late March update (can’t recall exactly). Since then, it’s been unplayable on this machine. Meanwhile, my older, less powerful PC runs the game with the same mods just fine.
MC Command Center and Better Exceptions can’t even capture the crash. The game shuts down so fast it doesn’t leave a trace. I’ve asked for help on the MC Discord and even ran suggestions from ChatGPT — everyone comes to the same conclusion: there’s some kind of overflow or recursive issue happening. Either my Sims are doing it, or other Sims in the current lot I’m not watching are causing it.
One more weird thing:
When I did a 100% clean install (no mods, default settings, fullscreen), I got a warning that my graphics card wasn’t detected. I followed the fix from bluebellflora referenced in a Reddit post about the undetected GPU issue.
After editing the .sgr file, the config went from 0,1 to 1,1 as expected — but even with that fix, the crashes continue.
I’m truly stuck. I don’t know what else to do at this point. If anyone in the community has insight, suggestions, or has been through something similar, I’d appreciate the help. I’m exhausted and just want to play the game I love.
Quick answers before anyone asks:
- Is your game pirated? No. I own the legit EA version.
- Do you use mods to increase rental? Yes, on old save data but tested without them too in a new save. Still crashed.
- Too many Sims? Yes — 400+. I tried sending 300+ to “Other Households.” Still crashed. Even with just 3 Sims in a new save, it crashes.
- Did you test other lots/worlds? Yes. Crashes whether I’m at home or visiting.
- Did you change anything in MC Command Center? Yes. I had increased the lot population cap from 20 to 50 and adjusted tuning for adult Sims. But in the fresh save, I didn’t tweak anything — still crashed.
- What mods do you use? A mix of CAS and gameplay tuning:
- Sims4me
- LittleMsSam
- KaylaDot
- Sim Control Hub
- MC Command Center
- **bleep**
- Selectable Pets Always
- BosseladyTV
Do I need help? Yes. Yes. Yes. FFXIV is going on a long hiatus and there’s no ultimate coming soon — this is my go-to game to relax and unwind. I’ll try playing something else for now while waiting for help here.
Thank you for reading this far. I really, really don’t want to give up on this game — but right now, I’m just dead tired.
I attached my lastCrash file from a few hours ago (before I gave up and went to make dinner). Let me know if you need anything else.
l4rmpecvszq4 I'm a little confused here. If you tested new sims in a clean user folder with no mods at all, how is your adult mod playing any role in the crashing? I understand that it could also be causing some crashes, but it shouldn't be the source of a crash with sims who've never been exposed to it.
If you do get another crash, try disabling CPU Turbo Boost in the BIOS Advanced settings. It might be called something slightly different, but it should be there somewhere; exactly where depends on your motherboard. This default overclocking setting frequently causes random crashes on high-end Intel processors like yours, and if a BIOS update doesn't help, the setting needs to be turned off entirely.
