When you try to place or replace a lot in build mode, does it matter which lot you use? If you're not sure, try saving a basic Maxis build (from within the game, not the Gallery) and using it to replace another lot, just as a test. Many builds broke with the For Rent patch or sometime afterwards, so it's important to find out whether the problem is the builds you're using or is more general.
For the crashing, is there any pattern to it? For example, does it always happen when loading a certain household or entering Build/Buy on a certain lot, while other households or lots are always fine?
As a side note, there's no official EA support on this site, mostly just players helping other players (or trying to, at least). The EA community managers are exactly that, not support reps.
