Re: Sims 4 Crashing after Update 02/27/2024

@Devarrious4221 and @lmj7tcywifmd  As a test, please try playing in a clean user folder.  Move the entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop, and when you launch the game, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  (Your saves and other content will be intact in the folder you moved but temporarily not read by the game.)  Don't add anything to the new folder yet; just let me know whether you can get far enough to start a new save and play in live mode for a bit.

If that doesn't help, please run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.

When I moved the folder to my desktop and started the game it still crashed. I then went to the electronic arts folder and deleted the new sims 4 folder and restarted my computer, reinstalled through EA, and that did it. Moved all my saves back, working fine now.

I am having the same issue. I deleted the entire folder from EA. It restarted, let me create whole new game. I exited out went back in and same issue again.

I’m having this problem too. My game will not launch at all. I get a message stating “unable to launch game.” I’ve tried repairing the game, clearing the cache and other fixes that were suggested but nothing works.

@theojames2007  You'll need to test your mods and custom content in batches, or use the 50/50 method if you have a lot of files to sort through:

    https://modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Finding_Problem_Custom_Content#The_50.25_Method

Keep in mind that you may have more than one bad mod—just because you found the first one doesn't mean all the others are fine.

Once you've done this, you can move the contents of the saves and Tray folders from the old Sims 4 folder to the new one and pick up where you left off.

  • I moved the folder to my desktop and was able to start and move around in sims 4 without crashing. I have no mods, so am I good to just move the original folder back? Would that not just result in the same crashing?

@courtnianagrande  Rather than move the entire folder, please only move the files you want or need to keep in order to preserve your work.  For example, you'll want to transfer the contents of the saves and Tray folders; the latter holds saved households and builds.  Keep Screenshots and Recorded Videos as well if they mean something to you, although these don't need to be inside the Sims 4 folder for you to access them.  Discard everything else and let the game generate new copies.

Please move over one folder's contents at a time and test afterwards.  It would be best to try your most recent save first, alone, and stop there if it crashes.  In that case, please describe the context of the crash, for example maybe it happens when you send your sims traveling or try to download a house from the Gallery.

  • Ok, I have done that, and now, and luckily it doesn't close within seconds of getting to my lot, but now it's about 10 minutes in. No consistency in what is causing it either. Before when it was closing nearly instantly, my Sim was just using the toilet. Now my sim is putting the baby to bed.

I only moved over the last save and no other files.

After using a clean user folder my sims game works perfectly well. I’m not sure why. What should I do next because I don’t want to start over.

  • @Erahna  Do you still need help?  If so, what you can do from here is start transferring your content from the old Sims 4 folder to the new one.  Test your mods and custom content first, if you have it; the 50/50 method can make the process a lot more efficient:

    https://modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Finding_Problem_Custom_Content#The_50.25_Method

When you're done with that, transfer the contents of the saves and Tray folders, plus Screenshots and Recorded Videos if you want to keep those.  The rest you can leave behind; the game will regenerate the files as needed.

  • Hi; my game keeps crashing. I currently just got my computer back from getting repaired. New graphics card and cleaned up of any viruses. I was told it was running fine they had no problems; but not I can’t seem I keep my game running for more like 2mins. It crashes within minutes of loading into my save. Does anyone how to help.

Since the latest update Sims 4 crashes at various different places in the game and in starting up I have attached the DxDiag file created on my laptop.

    Thank you,

    Craig

@digital_can  Do you use mods or custom content, and if so, have you tested without it?  Have you tested a different save?  I'm not saying your current save is broken, only that it's helpful to know whether the crashing follows you to a new one.

  • Well, I am back. I am running my Sims 4 on a Mac, so I am unsure what the dxdiag is, how does one do that? I was hoping the Mac OS update along with the Sims update would help, but no luck. I can try and move my sims to another lot and see what happens. If it fixes, I will let you know!

  • Well hell I’m not sure how I even got here in the first place. Thank you for all your help. I’ll give the Mac forum a shot.
