SIMS 4 Crashes After Latest Update – Stuck on Loading Screen

I've updated my GPU drivers, verified game files via Steam, cleared the cache, removed all mods, and even tried renaming save.ver files as others mentioned as solution — nothing has worked. The game still crashes or gets stuck on the loading screen every time!

My Sims 4 has always been set to auto-update, and this week it's become completely unplayable. This issue has never happened before, and it only started after the latest update.

Can anyone help me figure out how to fix this? Thank you in advance!

  • Here's what I did:

    1. I pulled the saves folder from my The Sims 4 folder in documents and put it on my desktop.
      2. I turned on the game, got to the main menu (the game didn't crash!).
      3. I enabled custom content and mods in the settings. Then you always have to restart the game (turn it off and on again) for the change to take effect.
      4. So I turned the game off and put the files from my original saves folder into the newly created saves folder. I didn't delete any files, not even the newest one.
      5. I turned the game back on, resumed my last save, and got to my household. It seems to be working fine.

I don't have time now to check it for a longer period of time and see if maybe the game crashes again after playing for a while. I'll try later.

  • mousleechrist  Try restoring any mods or custom content you've been using, updated versions if necessary.  Some users say that has helped.  And it would be great if you could provide a save, as well as a list of the mods and cc you previously used, in the master thread, as requested here:

Yanstrode briddybear ahnonii  Please remove your saves folder, and if it helps, see the above.

If that does NOT help, please try playing in a clean user folder.  Move the entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop.  When you launch the game, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  (Your saves and other content will be intact in the folder you've moved but temporarily unread by the game.)  Don't add anything to the new folder yet; just start a new save and see how it runs.

If you still can't play, please provide a dxdiag.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.
