sims 4 runs as background process

My sims 4 ran smoothly until today when it just runs as a background process. I have tried running as admin, i have tried running through the folder file itself and through origin but nothing seems to fix it. What should I do? Please help anyone (:

  • @CatiLicousNess  Do you see a Sims 4 icon in the Taskbar, and if so, does clicking that icon bring up the game window?

If not, as a test, please try playing in a clean user folder.  Move the entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop, and when you launch the game, if it launches, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  (Your saves and other content will be intact in the folder you moved but temporarily not read by the game.)  Don't add anything to the new folder yet; just let me know whether you can get far enough to start a new save and play in live mode for a bit.

If that doesn't help either, please run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.

@CatiLicousNess  Your dxdiag shows a couple of serious crashes of the graphics driver, or one of them anyway.  Since the dxdiag also lists some Windows errors, please start with a couple of basic checks of your Windows system files:

    • Hit Windows key-X
    • Choose either “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Windows Terminal (Administrator),” whichever option is offered
    • Inside the window that appears, copy and paste “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” without quotes, and enter
    • The system will start validating soon. If it throws an error, please list it here
    • After it reaches 100%, hit Windows key-X again
    • Again, choose “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Windows Terminal (Administrator)”
    • Inside the window, copy and paste “sfc /scannow” without quotes, and enter
    • Post the message you receive here

Restart your computer, hit Windows key-i, select Update & Security, and click the box to check for updates.  If any install, restart again afterwards.

Next, download and install the newest Nvidia driver:

    https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/194381/en-us/

Choose the custom (rather than express) install, and check the box to perform a clean install.  Restart again after installing the driver and before trying to play.

These issues should be addressed regardless, but if Sims 4 still doesn't load, please confirm whether the clean folder helped and whether the game's icon shows up in the Task Manager.

    Errors: None

Message: Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Sims 4 appears in the task manager as a background process using very little CPU.

However, when i use the new folder method you provided it runs as an app and i am able to play.

@CatiLicousNess  Alright, with the system issues addressed, you know that the previous issue with Sims 4 was related to something in your user folder.  Now you can start moving files from the old Sims 4 folder to the new one and testing.  Deal with your mods and custom content first; if you have a lot of it, you can use the 50/50 method to make the process more efficient.

Once you've sorted through your mods and cc, move over the contents of Tray (not the folder itself, just the files inside it) and test again, then move over your saves.  Most of the other files don't need to be transferred, but you can go over this list to make sure you're not missing anything you'd like to keep:

@plumbohead232  What exactly is happening when you try to play?  If you get an error, please post a screenshot.  And let me know what you're seeing in general: whether the game appears to launch, and if so, what was happening when it stopped working.

Your dxdiag (and thanks for providing one) doesn't list any Sims 4 crashes or any obvious reason the game wouldn't work.  That could mean that other errors have crowded out the crashes, or that the game isn't crashing but rather refusing to start entirely.  So please try again to play and then look for new errors in the Reliability Monitor.  Hit Windows key-R and enter "perfmon /rel" without quotes, and you'll see a chart of errors and updates with a column for each day.  Today is on the right.

Look for an error that happened at exactly the time of this attempt to play Sims 4.  If you find one, double-click it to see more details, then copy that info and paste it into a reply here.  If you don't see a new error, check back in an hour or so—the Reliability Monitor doesn't always update right away.

    Brother,

I've been trying to find a fix for like a week for my wife and this worked!. I then copied her saves back into the new folder that was made under EA after the first launch and now she can play her old saves again. Thanks very much for this!
