wow, it just finally worked

I am having precisely the same problem now. The really irritating part is that I blew 12 doughnuts on speeding up the build !
My neighbours have all disappeared and so has my Origin log on button. Is this just indicating that a server is down ? Will all return to normal when it comes back to life ? Do I get my doughnuts back ?

Guess this is connected to the Origin problems. With me it's the Bowlarama. Will try again when Origin is back up.

This plus the Bowlarama topics tells me the issue isn't each building, but rather whatever process is used when you add a building to your town. My guess is that when you click the icon, the game loads the asset then connects to EA via origin to sync data and confirm what all comes with it (timers, characters, task completion bonuses, etc). Since we can't connect to origin at this time, the game can't do that and so it crashes.
