What compass direction are the mountains?

In my mind, the mountains are to the north, and we are viewing the town from an angle. This is based upon the obvious fact that all the buildings are at an angle and additionaly most roads in standard, simple towns typically run north/south or east/west, not nw/se or ne/sw. Then again, part of my job involves property appraisal and township lines and stuff like that, so Im used to looking at maps.

Additionally, the icon used to move buildings around looks like a compass arrow thingie, but at an angle.

They are quite clearly east.

For the most part this is the map I've been trying to pattern my in game Springfield after, but with a few differences based on this map:

The map I linked to is a still from the zoom out opening of the show, and features a few noticeable differences, mainly Burns Manor being in the top Northwest corner and the airport more directly South of the Simpsons house. Of course, the show creators change up locations and positions of various buildings so much an official map of Springfield is nigh impossible, and overall the one you linked to does a good job (especially since the one from the show's opening I linked to doesn't have anything labeled).

But yeah, generally the mountains seem to be far, far West (across the river) and maybe some to the North.

I was truly going to give a scientific explanation as to the polar direction of the town utilizing US wind currents, as Springfield is supposed to be within the continental US. Utilizing the direction of the steam from the power plant as the indicator of wind current direction.. but alas the steam direction rotates with the cooling towers.. :?

The ocean is south. As per the map of Springfield so the mountains are west.
