During the night, when the headlights are pointing at gravel, it creates this weird "glimmer", as if every stone of the road is trying to generate a shadow on its own.
Its almost as if the stones were slightly blinking with shadows a few meters ahead in the front of the car.
To me this is super distracting, and feels like the game had bad antialising or something.
I seem to only be able to enjoy night/dark stages if I turn off the car headlights.
Increasing Anti-Aliasing at least to High and reduce Anisotroping filtering to x4 or even x2.
It will help a lot.
Also the night never get really dark, I can drive every night stage without lights
I still occasionally mistake a random gap instead a corner entry end up wrapped round a tree or rolling down a mountain 😂

Many race games have weird graphical glitches, always something thats odd.
I assumed this one is due to dlss? but you dont have it.
I am not bothered by it, but to put fuel to the fire. If you turn off the lights, the same effect occurs right in front of the hood.

Do you have DLSS on? Because this looks an awful lot like the "Sizzle" effect that DLSS produces.
No I do not. Turning anisotropic filtering off fixed the black glimmer bug but the road looks like its made of gum..
Since night in EA Sports WRC is not actually night, I will just drive with the headlights off.
Wonder why night in the game also isnt actually dark enough. Have the developers never seen night?

But thanks to @Javierdsv for starting this thread, too. Seemed like barely anyone cared how crazy and distracting the roads were at night w/ headlights, but there's a few more here. Still not enough to get them to do something about it, probably.

That does essentially appear to be what's happening in WRC from what I can tell. The "height" and intensity of the detail surface map(s) on the roads are "catching" the light from the shallow angle and shading all the tiny pockets and cracks and marks out to a good distance. Because these additional "details" are so small and yet intense, at a distance they become black pixels that shimmer and flicker in the strong headlights.
They don't appear to be real shadows since standard dynamic shadow casting seems to be disabled on the headlights, yet the normal maps and diffuse maps (or whatever) are still doing what they do when set too strong.

But in your video I still see Anisotropic Filtering at x16.
Yes, in current version of the game it will cause issues on the road on everything more then x4. Yes, EA should fix it, but there is a working walkaround now.
You say the road textures look washed out. By increasing AF you don't make them much better, but just add annoying artifacts. So there is no actual trade off.
