Try inviting the Sim that's in the detective career over and see if you can load the Sim afterwards.
Like: Load a family that knows the Sim, invite Sim.

I’ve managed to quit the Sim’s detective career through the inviting suggestion you made, now that the Sim is unemployed I’ve switched over to that household and now I'm not getting the error message or being booted back to the residential worlds. Must be an active careers bug.
