I've seen this as well. In my case the visiting sim does not own a small business at all, and is the lone member in their household. The business is owned by another previously played sim with one npc employee. Every time the employee mentors someone, I as the visiting sim get paid for it. I am not sure if the same happens when the owner mentors. By the way, in case it matters, I have seen this occur with Handiness, Painting, Gemology and Pottery mentoring.
