I play with no mods or CC and never have. I last played in July when the July 1 update broke everything. I started playing again on November 4 after the big patch. I have noticed some improvements, but the Geek Con event doesn't work correctly anymore.
I send my sim to the Con, and when the notification comes that sims can participate in the ultimate gaming test or the hackathon, both the gaming mats and the computers display the correct flashing animation that they always have. When I click on a gaming mat, the option to participate in the ultimate gaming test IS there. I'm able to participate and win (or lose) as usual.
However, there is no option to join the Hackathon when I click on a flashing/glowing open computer. It used to be on the first screen when you clicked on the computer, but it's no anywhere, not even in the programming subheader. I have tried it with two different brand new saves after repairing my game, have tried with low programming skill, medium, and max skill. The option isn't there.
I'm having the same issue. I am using Mods (MCCC and some build/buy mods), but I wanted to record this as well.

I'm wondering if my sim who is maxed in programming, a tech guru, finished the computer whiz aspiration and has the techie lifestyle, has custom actions from these things that maybe suppressing the hackathon option?
Does your sim have any of these?
Because I'm able to join the virtual game contest, I'm guessing because it's not a computer
The UGT doesn't allow a score above 30 so that's broken too. I had Geekcon come up in my gameplay tonight. A novice or professional tournament works as normal as far as I'm aware. The option is simply missing for the hackathon. My Sims had virtually no programming or had not completed that aspiration at all
It's not that for me at least, I can't join either challenge with any sim
