There are two Entertainment career events (at least) that give you a chance for an instant promotion, and result in the sim getting stuck at work. The Encore one outlined above, and one in the Comedian branch that will rocket you to the top of the career (not sure if there is one in the Musician branch as well.) I generally clear these by Saving to Main Menu and Resuming. Since I often have my primary sim marry Johnny Zest (who by default is in the Entertainer career), I see this a lot.
