UPDATE:
I'm reporting back on my playtesting with this bug.
So. I load into the family with all the pictures on their walls, but forgot they're actually from a mod
- facepalm -
"Ravasheen's Modern Family Portrait" (amazing mod I love, but unfortunately this means I don't have any other families to playtest with)
I am happy to report that her mod was not affected by this bug, and all my photos either remained intact or were restored with the switching out of the Screenshots folder.
I haven't been successful in triggering the black swatch on photos for any other households or saves by saving and reloading my game. For this reason, and the earlier realized ambition of being able to restore previously black photos, I feel the swatch changes are linked to the updates, specifically when the update takes place while the Screenshots folder is contained inside TS4 folder.
In the future, The Community should plan on backing up not only their Mods, Tray and Saves folders before updates, but also their Screenshots to avoid any possible loss of photos to this bug, until EA can get it sorted out.
(1st pic, Immediately after the update)
Realizing my Vanilla Save file was affected by the bug.
2nd pic
(After exiting out of game, and switching out Screenshots folder to the one I copied and removed prior to the update) Notice that 1 pic in the inventory is still blacked out. But, all the others have been restored.
3rd photo
Realizing Ravasheen's Mod is not affected by this bug, and all photos from her mod remain intact.
(And that I no longer have any families I can playtest with)
