Same! They just appeared out of nowhere on New Year's Eve, which does not have the gnome tradition, and destroyed EVERYTHING and set multiple fires, and no, none of the sims in the household had the new ailment that summons them. Like you, pleading got two of my sims hit by lightning indoors and I couldn't sell them. The only thing that got rid of them was kicking them every time they showed up until they finally stopped showing up. No idea what was going on.
