Severe lag after 1 hour of gameplay : requires restart

Hi,

I'm experiencing a major performance issue that seems to affect a lot of players (I asked my community and many confirmed having the same problem).

When I first launch the game, everything runs smoothly. Menus like Needs, Inventory, and Aspirations open instantly. Build/Buy mode is fine too, with maybe a tiny freeze the first time, but that’s normal.

The issue is: the longer I play, the worse the game performs.

- After around 30 minutes, the menus start to feel a bit slower.
- After about an hour, the game becomes extremely laggy:
  - Opening the Needs panel takes a few seconds.
  - Build/Buy mode freezes for 5–6 seconds before opening.
  - The Eyedropper tool has a delay of around 2 seconds.
  - UI and general interactions become very sluggish.

The only fix is to completely restart the game. After relaunching, everything is smooth again — but only temporarily. After another 30–60 minutes, the problem comes back.

This isn’t a hardware issue. My PC setup:
- Intel Core i9-12900K
- 64 GB DDR5 RAM
- NVIDIA RTX 4090
- Game installed on SSD
- No mods, no CC
- All expansion packs installed

I also tend to play fast-paced, usually on speed 3. In one hour of real-time gameplay, I can go through 10–14 Sim days. It seems like the game is slowly filling up memory or cache that never clears unless I restart.

It would be great to know if this has already been reported or tracked by the dev team, because it makes long play sessions really frustrating.

Thanks!

I'm having the same issue. The longer I play, the laggier it gets usually after 1 hour and I have to re-start, I did notice that my RAM usage increases over time as if it had memory leaks.

    My PC setup:

    • Intel Core i5-13600KF
    •  32 GB DDR4 RAM
    • NVIDIA RTX 3060 Ti
    •  Game installed on SSD

Hopefully this gets fixed in the next update.

  • When I come out of build/buy mode the game freezes. I can't change the clock speed and I cant select another sim. I can pan the camera around just fine and get into the pause menu too. Its just gameplay that's affected.  I cant click anything. After about 20-30 seconds the game catches up with itself and anything I clicked when it was frozen suddenly happens.

Sometimes this also happens in live mode (usually if the time was x3). What ever idle animation sims were doing loops over and over, time lighting such as the sun and shadows continues to progress and trees continue to sway. The clock remains frozen and again anything I click doesn't respond. Also the outlines that appear around sims and objects that usually appears when the cursor hovers about them doesn't show up.

Once again, the game eventually catches up with itself, and a interestingly the lighting jumps back to how it was when the game froze (morning for example)

I tried removing any mods, repairing the game through the EA app, even did a clean reinstall and didn't add back any mods, but the problem persisted. My graphics drivers are up to date and I play on a windows pc that is very capable so its not a hardware limitation.

This is a recent issue. Video attached, Sorry for low resolution!

While this issue has been around for a while after playing for several hours, since yesterday's patch it starts as soon as I load into a save. I keep having to pause the game for several minutes, every few minutes, for sims to "catch up" with whatever I queued them to do, or they will just stand there for literal sim hours doing nothing but idling, with the queued task just hanging there at the top, not started. This, combined with the general lag, makes playing the game increasingly frustrating.

  • Bonjour,
