My sims will autonomously go to put thier infant on the play mat and i want them to do something else, so i click cancel interaction and i even cancel them waking to the play mat, but they do not stop until they have put the infant down.

They are putting them down when you give them another action, pick it up again (if you don't cancel the interaction) and then do the correct one ?
Yes, this has also been happening with my sims. i get them to feed the infant in a highchair and they sit down before going to do it and often cancel the interaction adn when they will do it, it takes a long time.
I get this too and have to reset the infant sim and the parent/person trying to put them to bed/down
