One of my sims went to work, and after coming home from work, was still shown as being at work in the household members panel.
Additionally, the away action that she was doing could be changed, with Schmoozing with Boss giving a boost to her career performance.

I've had this happen whenever an event happens that would cause the sim to get promoted while they are still at work (since promotions normally happen once work has ended). In fact, it's pretty consistent that if a pop up (like the one for comedians that can instantly put them at level 10) happens, then the sim will still show as being at work even while they are at home at the end of their shift.
