Dig piles (just dirt, not the kind with crystals or metals) are stacked on top of each other. I'm not sure if they are endless, but my sim with no Natural Living skill just went up to level 2 by digging piles over and over in the same spot. I stopped counting at 25 dig piles. It seems to be happening in every world.
