Re: ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Creating a symlink in macOS to store the Sims 4 folder on an external drive

hey! I actually direct messaged you. I was able to get my mods folder back into on my regular documents folder on my Mac. I want to start over and create the symlink but some reason even though it tells me it was successful I'm not getting that black arrow in the corner of my folder, any idea why?

Please see my signature re. private messages ๐Ÿ™‚

There could be lots of reasons why, if properly followed the guide works 100%.

you said see your signature re. private messages, I wanted to know if I can't some one on one possibly only moving my mods, cc folder and my packs and leaving my actual sims game on my desk top?

I'm sorry but I don't understand your reply above. Where is the game saving to currently, where is the active Sims 4 folder?

Oh okay I understand now, but it is currently saving back in my original EA folder on my desktop. Its basically back to how it originally was aside from missing some cc and modes I accidentally deleted trying to create space. I want to keep my sims game on my desktop and move my mods and cc folder on to the drive since that takes up the most space on my desktop. Is that possible? Rather than moving my entire game altogether because that is where I get stuck.

The game doesn't save to the desktop, by default it is always to the Documents folder.

Please open Terminal and copy and paste the following search command then hit Enter/Return:

    find ~ -type d -name "*The Sims 4*" 2>/dev/null

After a little while it will return the results of the search. Please copy and paste the results in a post here.

Thanks! C/P lists are always better than screenshots.

There is only one place your game will load saves, mods, and all your user content from in that list:

    /Users/nekia/Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4โ€จ

    Everything else is being ignored.

Okay I get it! So it that where I should try to create the symlink so that I can move my mods & cc folder to my hard drive but leave my actual sims 4 game in my documents folder on my Mac?

    Yes, butโ€ฆโ€ฆ

What do you mean by your Sims 4 game in your Documents folder? Where is the base game and Sims 4 Packs folder installed?

Itโ€™s really not a good idea to install just your Mods folder on an external drive, you should move the Sims 4 folder or, and this is my preference, the Electronic Arts folder. To be clear, the Electronic Arts folder which is currently in your Documents folder as confirmed in my previous post.

Yes I thought it would be possible to store only my mods folder but I was originally trying to move my entire Electronic Arts folder to the hard drive and run my game from there I couldn't get the symlink to work that was the part I was stuck on. If I move my entire folder and my origin app to my hard drive would it work like that?

    @princesskiaaa_

No. The game installation (base game + Sims 4 Packs folder) which is downloaded from Origin is completely separate from the Sims 4 folder that contains your saves, mods etc.

The game installation does not require the symlink.

The Electronic Arts/The Sims 4 folder requires the symlink.

Okay I am going to try and wipe my hard drive and see if I can try the symlink again. I honestly just want to move my entire game Origin and all to my hard drive because sims is the only game I play on there anyway.

Yes, having the game and Electronic Arts folder on the external can work. What is your game library location showing in Origin? Origin > Preferences > Installs & Saves, could you post a screenshot of that too.

Could you also post a screenshot of the contents of your local Documents folder on your Mac?

I gave it a rest on trying to move the folder and start redownloading a lot of cc I lost lol

Great, and the game loads ok from the external?

    I would try:

Create a new folder on the external drive, call it โ€œPrevious EA folderโ€ or similar, and move that existing Electronic Arts folder that is on the external into it. Then, empty the trash on your Mac, close all apps including Origin, eject the external drive and restart your Mac.

Once your Mac has restarted, plug the drive back in and open it so the contents fully load in Finder. Next, open Origin. It will probably want to repair the game and all packs because the drive has been unplugged so wait for that to finish.

Once all that is done, try the guide again so do step 1 and move the Electronic Arts folder from your Documents folder to the external then do step 2 and create the symlink.
