Re: Motion Sickness - Please RE don't forget about us suffering from this annoyance.

I absolutely agree. I'm playing on PS4 and feel pretty dizzy really fast from playing Apex. Never had any issues with Titanfall 2, though. Neither with default FOV nor with the value upped to 100 (both on PS4 & Xbox One). Love that game so much!

Thus I think the (new) crosshair sway is the main problem for me. With The Division I also get motion sick due to the bobbing HUD next to the player character. Nevertheless I would prefer for head bob to be completely optional. I think it's unrealistic, annoying and makes games unnecessarily more difficult to play as it is harder to focus on what's happening. The unstable framerate also doesn't help (on base PS4).

Other FPS games I can think of right now that I don't have any problems with are Doom 2016 (PS4 and PC max. settings) with FOV set to 100 and the first Dishonored (PC, max settings, 60 fps, FOV 100 and head bob turned off).

Other games that cause motion sickness for me are Far Cry 5 on PS4 (most likely due to the ridiculously low FOV at 30 fps), Skyrim on PS4 and PC (low FOV and head bob galore) and RAGE on PC (low FOV and head bob). Increasing FOV and removing head bob (on Rage via ini-file edit and via mod on Skyrim) made the games perfectly playable without any issues. Without head bob I can play Skyrim all day without any issues. Far Cry 5 with increased FOV (100) and stable 60 fps also is very playable for me.

Oh, can't forget God of War 2018 with its horrible shaky cam! Even when disabled for gameplay the constant shaking during cutscenes makes me feel nauseous in a heartbeat.

Update: Still dislike the head bob a lot BUT I changed the FOV to 80 before I started playing today and now have been playing for 3 hours with a lot less issues. Previously I've been playing with FOV set to 100, then 90. Still think the game would benefit from making head bob optional or deactivating it altogether, though.

@Rucola-Joe Thanks for posting that, hopefully doing so alleviates this issue for others in your situation.

  • @EA_David You're welcome! Can confirm that it hasn't been a one-shot yesterday. Have been playing for another 3 hours today and the effects of motion sickness still are minimal at worst (if there are any at all) with FOV set to 80. I mostly play as Pathfinder, sometimes as Bloodhound, if that's of interest. I'm happy I can now enjoy this awesome game without feeling dizzy!

The camera jarring while doing melee attacks needs to also be fixed, it's not just a while running issue.

  • Nope, that doesnt help.

For 3 days i've been trying to find a solution to this, trying different configuration of settings.
The problem is, that we get neusea because of non intentional camera movement-for instance-wouned state in the beggining of tutorial, with sprint and peacekeeper reload anims being the worst things to experience.

Please tell me that this thing is noted, and theres a High-Critical state on that bug.

Technically it's not a bug, but I see what you mean. Somehow I got used to all the camera movements, so (at least for some people) it's possible to adapt. Though I gotta say: After playing for several hours as Pathfinder, I played one match as Gibraltar whose head bob seems to be different from Pathfinder's. I did feel a bit nauseous for a short amount of time after switching to Gibraltar. I got used to his movements pretty quickly then, though.

I recommend trying capsules with ginger rhizome. They are meant to help with sea sickness. I think they mitigated my symptoms before I got used to the bobbing.

So okay, i've spent some more time to investigate and check out what makes ppl sick.

1-Wounded state-part of you helasth is missing, you go in to kind of wounded state (easy to note at the start of tutorial)
Why? Non intentional camera movenent, no point to focus for your eyes because crosshair also affected.

2-A huge amount of camera shake, srsly whats that? Michle Bay got to make games?
Why? No point to focus for your eyes, for instance screenshake+animations makes jump kick a vomit machine.
This case also includes such thing as sprinting, some reload anims and many other things.

3-And all of that is topped with a horrible head bobbing.

So why i am complaining about this stuff.
Im a tryhard, i played a huge amount of fps games through my life and it started with Doom2 back in the ninetees.
And if game has a shiny-sparky effects (blur, hell load of particles, depth of view), or motions wich makes my screen act like a drunk 16 y.o girl on a party (head bob, camera sway), i want to turn them off.
    Why?
1st of all-i dont feel myself comfortable with those things turned on.
2nd it affects eyes fatigue and causes nausea

And yeah a big good old menu for turning those things off is a great thing.
Im not speaking about lovering all stuff so game looks like q3.

Some people think turning those thigs off is unfair, but this isnt, its about your comfort.

But the thing that triggers me most off all is that this game camera action tries to copy human body non intentional movements. But srsly our brain cut this stuff off for a reason, you always can stay focused ignoring heavy breating or running.

  • @FlatFac3d: Totally agree with your last two sentences. Many games try to make first person view feel more realistic/immersive by implementing camera movements that you actually don't see in real life. When I walk, run or jump my view doesn't shake, bump or uncontrollably sway about. So these camera movements actually make no sense in terms of realism. I can see why some people like them, but as motion sickness is a thing, they should be optional.

With Apex I think the shaking when sprinting is the biggest problem as that's the game's main way of traversal.
