The problem with snipers

Good evening everyone,

I'm here to vent a bit from my point of view. I'm not saying I'm right or wrong, just giving my perspective on the whole thing.

But I feel like there is way too many snipers available in the rounds being played nowadays.

The maps are getting more and more open, a lot of the fun, closed in areas are getting removed and replaced with open areas fit for the snipers taking.

There are so many games where everything has gone right, with lots of fun and interesting close combat or mid range fights, working your way up for a potential win.

Then all of a sudden it's all brought to an end, when you get squeezed in by two to three squads, all wielding snipers, and you're powerless.

They're not firing at eachother, they're almost ignoring eachother because they're behind cover, with their bags filled up with medical supplies.

And there you are, stuck in the open, maybe a rock could save you? No, because there's more than one squad aiming down your neck.

I really think this game could benefit from having less snipers be available per round, and even add in more closed in areas, like good old Skull Town, or even Slum Lakes.

But no, they had to be removed and replaced with open areas, again, fit for the snipers and not really for the people who enjoy a good, high paced close combat fight.

I remember the good old Kings Canyon, before all the events unraveled, where there were lots of buildings to hide in, at bridges, south and east settlement, thunderdome and whatnot.

But they are nothing but a thing of the past nowadays. You could choose where to take the fights, you could utilize the buildings to your advantage.

Nowadays you're lucky if you manage to get close to a building before you're sniped down.

At the same time, I know change is required to keep a game alive. However, it feels like some of the changes have not been for the better in my opinion.

But, I am just one guy, with one heck of an opinion. I'm interested in seeing what you guys think.

  • @Rageborns_FuryI heard the Triple Take is getting Care Packaged so that will be one less sniper but then again they are adding a bow so not really, personally I hate the open rings with nothing to defend behind except a rock if you are lucky and if a team has the high ground with horizon or pathfinder your pretty much screwed without a Gibralter or Rampart

I'm definitely curious to see how the changes to Olympus shake things up in this regard.

While that looks largely centered around a particular POI, it's definitely disrupted some pretty long sightlines in the area and should be interesting to see how map designs evolve going forward.

I've been both the group with the high ground and the one trying desperately to make insufficient cover work against squads that had better positioning, so I can feel your perspective in my soul.

Thanks for the detailed thoughts here!

  • I'm happy to see that others sort of share my thoughts.

I've not yet dared to try out Season 9, but I am indeed curious to try the map after mentioned changes etc.

Hopefully we'll see some changes in the future that will be aimed towards us, who enjoy the closed in fights compared to the open field battles.

Thanks for taking the time to respond!

well the thing is: you prefer that single aggressive playstyle.

it is fine, but it has flaws. the biggest of it is that you first have to close the distance to the enemy to be effective.

once you are, snipers get worse against people wielding an SMG/AR + shottys.

the only way counteract this is to utilize a sniper yourself.

by that i do not mean you should 3 snipers yourself, but one out of the 3 players should definetly wield a weapon that can provide long range pressure.

i see that in progames aswell and i argue the same way. it does not make sense to be effective in close combat on 3 players while having no answers beyond that.

imho the new marksman category with its possibility to even work as a shotgun, though not as effectively as an actual shotty,

pushes out the sniper rifles even further, because you get a decent shotgun while having also a decent long/midrange weapon.

which makes me think what purpose sniper rifles have in apex legends at all, because you mostly spot enemys at midrange.

yes they all are pretty good, but lose most of their validity when it comes to close combat, while 2 marksman rifles now have the ability to be just as strong midrange and swap to close combat shottys with 1 button.

BOCEK and 3030 should be the weapons you should work with in my opinion.

not 3 on a team. but at least one of you should carry an "answer".
