Why shotguns don't belong in Apex Legends

Let me criticize shotguns in a whole, rather than pointing out the overuse of Mastiff/EVA-8.

Shotguns in a traditional sense are dangerous, but only when two requirements are met: you're close enough to make all pellets hit and you approach your enemy safely. And usually this is balanced, because getting up-close like that in other games takes time (usually crouching for no noise). Apex Legends is heavily mobility based, and you can get up-close and personal with your enemy in no time, even on distances of 50+ meters. This makes shotguns especially lethal. So even if you notice someone early enough, they can get to you very quickly, and often suppress you with their other weapon. In other words: Making use of shotguns is deceivingly easy. If you pair this with legends like Pathfinder, Octane, Valkyrie or Wraith, you make Shotguns even better.

It's easier to hit with shotguns on very close combat than with any other weapon. Someone who doesn't have a shotgun is in a slight disadvantage. And the most common combination I see in Arenas for instance is EVA-8 and Spitfire. And trust me, fighting against someone who has both of these sucks.

Shotguns as they are right now don't belong in Apex Legends. It's too easy to get close to your enemies which diminishes the risk of using shotguns, and is made easier with every season. For all we know the next guy/girl we have can blink in their sprinting direction and get closer even faster.

My two pennies, the EVA-8 squad can now come to ruin this thread.

  • The problem isn't the damage the Shotguns dish out. Thinking back to it, I think almost every PvP and PvE shooter I have ever played has made shotguns a one-shot-kill weapon. It's the viability. EVA-8 and Mastiff are extremely forgiving shotgun that still pack a massive punch. Both can shoot pretty quickly, deal 2-tap damage in early stages and they have usually a very easy-to-predict pattern.

Some of these problems could be solved by making mobility less of a balance issue but hey, what do I know, I just keep dying to the same things over and over again with no way to counter it.

Sipers are  fine,  except  the bowkek has faster projectile speed than a sniper, which is a sorryass lame thing. Shotguns should not be in Apex, at least not with a serious damage and-or reload time nerfing. And hate it or not, I'll report  every single  shotgun kill as gameplay exploit until anything happens. I'm officially  sick that an EVA-8 with a purple bolt can grind down an entire squad...

  • This is why it is so annoying. No matter how good you are, those shotguns just can't be beaten... Less than 2 seconds TTK.

  • I'd rather write into a topic I already participated in. I want to bring this up again because it's getting worse. And I didn't think it could get worse. It's getting more and more common that whole enemy squads use the EVA-8 or Mastiff and shred through teams like they're butter. It's getting heavily annoying as well when your entire team takes EVA-8 as well and expects you to take one, too.

I just had the case where people kept pestering me about taking an EVA-8. Like yeah... People expect you to take the meta.

Really, how do people keep thinking this meta is alright and supposed to be this way?

Professionals: Just don't let them get up-close.

Players: Okay! But how do I do this? They can teleport, sprint at you, grapple or do other fancy things to shorten the time it takes for them to get to you?

    Professionals: Use Revenant.

Players: Okay, but what if I don't want to play revenant?

    Professionals: Use cover.

Players: What point does cover have if people hug you with the shotgun and there is zero point in using cover?

    Professionals: Adapt instead of whining.

    Players: ???

  • With more and more movement-based characters being in the game now, it makes sense as to why shotguns are a problem. I think their purpose is clear and they do their job a little too well, even though shotguns are a relatively necessary gun archetype in this game. Aside from that thought, EA will never remove a gun from the game (rather throw it into CP or nerf it) since that would be violating everyone who purchased skins for that gun.

I think there are a few ways to go about this. My first idea was to entirely remove the shotgun bolt from the game. It's one of those "if anyone can use it I'm going to too," types of attachments, and I think it makes shotguns too aggressive in close range. If you think about the no-bolt fire rate of all shotguns, they seem to fit into the game a lot better than a purple bolt EVA-8 or Mastiff. I don't think a huge damage nerf would be productive, as it would just throw close range into SMG meta instead of solving the shotgun issue comprehensively. I'm down to hear more of what you have to say though, shotguns are now a permanent part of the game but they're incredibly over-tuned this season.

Overused. Every single ranked game ends with my random squadmates running straight into enemy fire, get killed, me trying to save them and get shot in the face with a shotgun. So yeah, CP weapon, or the option to simply opt them out, or a separate game mode that has only shotguns in it... They don't belong to fair games
