Let's Talk Revive/Respawn Mechanics

I know there's always the people who like the status quo, and this isn't a topic I've seen so it could be argued that it isn't a problem, but lately I've been thinking about things that could be improved, and in a way, this is one of them.

First off, I've begun to wonder what exactly inspired the way these mechanisms work right now.  To their credit, Respawn added revives and respawn to the BR genre (correct me if I'm wrong, I have no ego about it, that's where I've seen it), at least since Apex added it, Fortnite rushed to add their own version.  And this goes WAY back to Season 1.  But of course, Respawn didn't invent the idea of picking up your team mates in a game. I've been seeing that since Left 4 Dead.

On its face, it's a good idea.  I mean it beats the alternative of no revive, game over.  It is, of course, not meant to put you back, however, like instant respawn from classic FPS games going back since the beginning or even timed respawns or any respawn at all.  And that's sort of where my wondering begins.

Control kind of points out how respawn can be a good thing.  Kills a lot of established mechanics like death boxes and Lifeline pick ups, etc. etc. But all revive and respawn mechanics were made up somewhere at the beginning of the game, and I'm kind of thinking there are some improvements to be made.

Reviving seems to take a damn long time, and even if you agree with how long it takes, it does mean right now it's a big risk to pick up someone in a fight, unless you are Lifeline.  Of course, the amount of time it takes to self revive with a gold shield is straight stupid, but that's not such a huge factor by comparison to general revive time.  Respawn is just risky because the whole dam world sees your ship coming in and you basically arrive in full chump gear, with no weapon.

My one complaint, even if nothing else is changed, is I don't think you really need a respawn counter time out.  Because its so risky anyway, and the ring keep shutting off respawn stations as the game progresses, to make people also have to retrieve boxes within a certain amount of time is really a step too far.   I don't mean that people shouldn't be able to leave the game after 2:30, like they can already.  But I do think you would get more people trying to respawn team mates if they knew they weren't walking straight into an ambush automatically because of the clock.  Get rid of the graying out, is what I'm saying, if you are going to keep the rest the way it is.

Anyway, those are my inquiries.  Not sure anything is going to come that's useful from this but I have been thinking about it lately, and I kind of think things can be improved upon, which would encourage more pick ups and team play (yeah, I know, easy to be cynical about that one).

  • Removing timeout counters lowers the risk of picking up your buddies though, you keep pushing for those tags and people take time guarding them. This would more or less disappear if you can just pop by on your own accord to pick up your buds. Idd say early game revives aren't very risky as long as you pick the right place and rotate fast. But lategame revives are seriously risky.

I have no idea how this would play out, so I'm fencing a bit on this one, i might be stupid but I can really get a good or bad vibe for what I would prefer off the bat.

Strategywise i like the fact that if you win you can choose to protect your win to make sure you got an edge later when you meet the survivors.

  • I think it's worth considering at least.  If it weren't for a ring which is its own timer, I wouldn't vouch for this.  But I think it would matter most for early game kills if you wanted to hang around and try to carry your mates.  This also wouldn't matter for pubs much, because they would probably leave after 2:30 anyway, but I think it would help a lot to have people stick around in ranked games.

@KelRiever I think the concern about no timer is lots of respawns and more team left later but I'm not against having no timer. My preference is there's no deathbox pickup at all. You instantly have your teammates in your pocket when they die.
  • Not a bad idea either.  I mean, it's pretty risky getting to a respawn site, or even setting a respawn beacon, so I get it.

  • @KelRiever Here's my hot take: I'm speaking as one of those players who feels like enemies can put me down just by looking at me, and I basically have to barf up a lung just to get a down on someone else, two lungs and a kidney for a kill. So when I do that much work to get someone out of the game, I'm not really sure I want the dev to make it any easier than it already is to bring them back. Revive/respawn shouldn't be a get-out-of-jail-free card. They exist because it makes it easier for pre-made squads to stick together over the course of multiple matches, but there most definitely should be a cost to getting downed and a cost to getting killed. It's the game's way of saying, "You messed up. You may or may not get a do over depending on your squadmates, but even if you do get one then you need to make a fearless moral inventory, as they say. You need to figure out what went wrong and how to minimize the odds of it happening again." If players get easy and endless re-entry to the game then how are they supposed to learn anything about actions and consequences?

If it was up to me, revive would stay as it is and respawn would be out of the game completely. I'd like to think that would make the average player a little less reckless though I'm sure that thinking is wishful at best.

New! Epic/Legendary Survival Item something more faster then a regular or mobile respawn beacon. Maybe you pull out a golden Nokia 3310, send in the text message of approximate coordinates, Goblin Dropship appears on top of you, much higher then usual and players drop out in free fall like in the beginning of the match or something, IDK, my team mates NEVER-EVA die.

@KelRiever Remember the ltm that was supposed to have 6 modes? This was one of them that was supposed to happen and never did.
