100% CPU Utilization on Apex

Hello All.  This week, I've noticed the CPU utilization going haywire on my rig when I play apex.  I play apex on 1440 (switching to 1080P makes no diff) and a majority of the settings all on low.  My GPU is a 1070TI and a I3-8350K processor with 8GB of RAM.  It doesn't matter what I seem to do, when I'm dropping in or in an intense battle my CPU utilization is pegged at 99-100%.  This doesn't introduce significant game lag (that i can tell), but my audio output through discord is choppy for the people i'm talking to the point they can't understand me.  I've read through numerous posts, some of which are so old that i'm not sure they're even relevant anymore.  I'm happy to provide any additional details to try and triage this problem.

  • Quick update.  I did catch Blueberry's PC Troubleshooting pinned post and tried everything in there.  Performing one by one changes to see if any of those fixed a problem.  Coupling and decoupling changes along the way.  No permutation of changes seem to influence CPU usage at all.

  • Alright so I think I may have figured the issue out on my own, but I'm looking for some confirmation and maybe a suggestion on a path forward towards a "real fix."

The main symptom I found to be the smoking gun was while looking at task "mangler", it appeared that my CPU usage was pegged at 100% but my GPU was sitting around 20-30%.  With that, I figured I'd try to dial back the max FPS to 60 and my CPU wasn't going above 85% (at worst) while in game after that.  I bumped it to 72fps (mainly because I have 144HZ) per recommendation of an article that I found elsewhere and that seems to be my sweet spot.  I have a few cases where I see it go up to 100%, but I think it's relatively tolerable.

Now for the stab at the "real fix" - I think what can be concluded from this is that my CPU is holding back my GPU from doing what it's really capable of.  However, will I notice much difference playing 72 FPS on a 144HZ monitor then if I had true 144 FPS?  Real question, is it worth the upgrade to a processor I just bought in december of last year?

Thanks for posting. Whether a CPU upgrade is worth it or not really needs to be determined on an individual basis. How much performance do you need, what is your budget etc.

    Also: task mangler 🙂
