Apex Legends 1 FPS in menus and unable to load into matches

I've got the most recent bios update available for my motherboard (Asus H87 plus). I have the latest NVIDIA drivers for my GTX 1070. I have all of the necessary CPU and motherboard drivers I need.

Games like PUBG, Black OPS 4, ARMA 3, etc... all run fine on my PC.

Except for Apex Legends, Apex is literally unplayable.

For starters, I have to use notepad to edit my videoconfig.txt settings and disable fullscreen and enable noborderwindow in the Apex folder located under USERS, that's just to get the game to launch at all. (If I don't do this, I get errors stating that the game doesn't support my resolution, no matter what I set it to including, 720p 1080p and 600p.) No other game has these issues.

Once the game is launched and I'm in the first menu, the FPS is literally 1-5 FPS. My 3 other friends have computers with similar (or worse) specs than mine and they play this game fine, except for my one friend who experiences the game crashing at least 5-10 times a day.

The audio in the first menu is extremely laggy to match the low FPS. When I check to see the CPU usage of this game in the first menu it is 96-100%. When I try to join a multiplayer match while queued with my friends, they tell me that the game says I'm "preloading data". Eventually, the game either freezes up or after waiting 10 plus minutes I close it. The closest I have got to playing in a match was seeing a black screen with some hud display icons showing up.

NVIDIA Geforce Experience claims that my optimal settings for this game are high for everything, and yet not even the lowest settings work.

I have the game installed on an HDD with an extra 250GB of free space left open.

Please help me resolve this issue.

  • I read this topic where someone was experiencing this issue and after cleaning up the processor it improved:

    https://answers.ea.com/t5/Technical-Issues/Very-low-FPS-with-good-specs-PC/td-p/6930094

Also for my processor I use Coolmaster MasterGel pro, before this I was experiencing thermal throtteling for my intel staying around 90 degrees celsius for simple games, now cleaning up it rarely goes above 75 degrees. Please check what is happening with your temperature

Is it possible that the game is switching to integrated intel HD graphics, if so you could find a way to disable this from happening. (I disabled integrated hd graphics in my bios)

Before you make any changes I would advice you to wait for some more feedback from other people as a simpler solution might arise.

  • I recently switched to steam as it is available there now. I played for one day without any issues. But now when I'm opening the game it says "failed to create game window resolution (1280x1080) unsupported?". I looked up online for some solutions and had to change the resolution in videoconfig.txt file. But after doing this my game is running on almost 1 fps. And I think I'm facing the same issue as yours. I was wondering if you could solve the issue?

  • Hi, @EA_Atic

I'm experiencing the exact same issue on the Steam version, start my .exe as it does support format (1280x720) even the the Video Config file has my details as 1920x1080.

The game does however load when switching the numbers for 0 to 1 or vice versa for the fullscreen and nowindowborder settings. But then when the game opens I'm stuck on 1-5 FPS.

    Was still playing fine Yesterday.

I'm at the moment still trying some fixes reported by others. Will keep this updated if a fix is found.

I did the same thing. I fix the resolution problem but then only got 1fps after. I have played for months no issues. I have resinstalled the game multiple times, checked file integrity on steam and through windows, I am at a loss what to do. Please give me suggestions
