bug - multiple xbox gamertags linked to same EA account
My brother and I occasionally share an xbox, though we also have our own, which of course we each need when playing apex together. When cross progression went live (automatically, without our consent) it merged our two xbox gamertags into one EA account. As a result we have lost our individual apex progress and cannot play together as the game thinks we are the same player.
I have contacted EA support who, not only have been entirely unhelpful, blamed me for having my account hacked, then told me I was violating their terms of service by having multiple people use the same EA account. Completely incorrect, infuriating, and insulting. Clearly we could never have played the game together for years had we shared the same account the entire time. And I would have gladly avoided this whole issue, had we known somehow our EA account would be automatically created/merged.
Their only proposed solution is that we unlink the accounts, making one of them lose all progress. This is not a solution at all, not to mention I'm sure then one of us would be banned for smurfing.
The actual solution is that cross progression should never have been mandatory and that in these circumstances each individual xbox gamertag needs its apex progress restored, then we can link each one to separate EA accounts.
I am incredibly disappointed. We cannot play together until this bug is fixed.
Hey @ValiantBasilisk,
Sorry to hear about the trouble you've been having after Cross Progression was enabled on the account. Just to clarify a bit further however, this is not actually a bug.
The way Cross Progression works is essentially by merging the various platforms on an EA account into a single profile, which is then used for Cross Progression going forwards. That allows you to access the same content across various platforms on the EA account, as it's all essentially the same profile.
This is notably different than before, when as you mentioned, you were able to play on separate profiles on the same EA account. That's no longer possible as each EA account essentially has the one profile now.
Additionally, only accounts that were already connected to the same EA account were merged. We did not (and cannot) merge platforms that were on separate EA accounts. As @Asmodeus566 mentioned, Apex cannot be played without logging into an EA account.
The very first time you launch either Apex or another EA game on an account, it will prompt you to log into an EA account. That's then associated with that platform and wouldn't require you to enter the EA account login information afterwards once the accounts were linked, so it's understandable you may not have realized this was the same account years later.
As you've noted, the only solution to this will be moving one of those Xbox accounts to its own EA account, as that should only be accessed by the registered account owner. Unfortunately this won't be possible to keep progress as that's tied to the EA account, so whoever moves off will be starting fresh.
