game download bug

i dont know if anyone can help but my apex update on EA is 58.0GB but on steam its only 10GB, why is this??

  • Some background info that might be nice to know:

Game files are packed in certain files (.rpak files in this case), this means that if something is updated, they would need to either:

    1. Replace the entire .rpak file (Even if 1% got updates)
    2. Or unpack the .rpak file, replace what got changed, and repack it back.

Option 1 means that you would have to install more via your network (So if you have slow internet, it would take really long to download)
With Option 2, you rely more on disk speed (Meaning you download less, so slower internet won't hold you back as much, as long as you have a fast enough drive)

Option 2 is used on both EA App and Steam as far I'm aware.
This means that it first will download the required items from the internet, and once it's done with that, it'll start to unpack, replace and repack the files. (This is why the update sizes look so big, but it's not actually downloading all of that, but it is modifying that amount of data)

It's possible that on the EA App it simply just displays the total size of content that will be adjusted.
This means that you might just be installing 5GB of content from the internet, whilst unpacking/repacking around 50GB of content.

Steam on the other hand, only displays how much you are going to download from the internet before you start the update. Once Steam has downloaded all the files, it will show how much data it will unpack/repack in a separate step. (So Steam technically doesn't show the actual 'update size' in the sense that the EA App does)

So this means that Steam and the EA App require you to download around the same amount of GB from the internet, and also around the same amount to unpack/repack the contents.
It's just that Steam displays it differently than the EA App does. With Steam first showing the GB you need to download, then the GB that's going to be packed/patched. And the EA App just shows instantly the size of it.

In my case, the update ended up being 125.5GB on Steam because it had to repack the entire game, but this can differ per player.
