Only One Xbox Gamertag per EA Account

Hello,

I went to unlink my Xbox account that has been inactive since ~2013.  To my surprise, I learned that only Xbox account can ever be linked to an EA Account.  I luckily did not not touch my PSN account, which has all of my progression.  Surely there must be a way to work around this "one account for life" policy on a case by case basis?
