I was able to play before the latest patch, but after having downloaded the patch I can only get the game to the main menu, the screen where you can choose your server. If I hit X to continue it then goes to a black screen with the apex banner in the bottom right, then after a few seconds the music cuts out and then it continues to stay on that screen indefinitely.

Please verify that your game software and your system software is up-to-date.
You might also want to try to do a powercycle:
1. Completely turn off your PlayStation 4.
2. Wait until the power indicator light stops blinking and unplug the power cord from the back of the console.
3. Wait approximately 30 seconds and plug the power cord back into the console
4. Turn on your PS4 and try to see if this fixed the issue.
If above don't work, have you tried to reinstall the game? (reinstall on original hdd if you use a secondary)
yes i have tried all your suggestion's and it has not resolved the issue. I have also created a new account and tried to start apex and that has not helped either.
