Dear EA/DICE: You’re Losing the Battlefield Community

Dear Developers,

I want to start by saying that I honestly wish I didn’t have to write this post. I’m writing this as someone who’s genuinely sad and frustrated. It’s obvious that EA wanted to attract CoD players — and at first, I completely understood that and had no problem with it. My first impressions from the Beta were great, I was truly hyped, pre-ordered the Phantom Edition, and couldn’t wait for October 10th.

Today I’m level 110, and I think it’s finally time to share my thoughts. I’ve been playing Battlefield for around 15 years, and my favorite will always be BF2 (RIP GameSpy).

Well… we definitely got a product aimed at CoD players — but in the worst possible way. The TTK and TTD are absolutely miserable, the 4-player party limit is a joke, forced operator choices feel out of place, and there’s NO SERVER BROWSER! How can the lead producer say we don’t need one? I honestly thought it was a joke at first — and that the community feedback would be heard — but nothing ever happened.

Matchmaking is a disaster. Every second match I play is completely unbalanced. There’s no option to pick the attacking or defending side without disconnecting and reconnecting a dozen times until it finally puts me where I want to be. This problem used to be handled by server admins through the browser — they helped keep matches fair and balanced.

And don’t even get me started on the challenges.
They’re an absolute pain to complete. I honestly don’t know if they were designed by an AI or by someone who’s never actually played the game, but they’re a complete tragedy.

The overall pace of the game is way too fast, leaving almost no time for proper teamplay, even when you actually try to play tactically with friends. The gameplay experience feels on par with BF2042 — but ironically, that game still had more freedom. I honestly get the feeling that the developers haven’t played this game for more than 20 minutes… or worse, that this is intentional — which would be really sad and could bury the entire franchise.

What also really disappoints me is the complete lack of developer feedback here on the forums. I understand you can’t respond to every single post, but it would be basic respect to at least address some of the hot topics here. Right now the community feels unheard, like our frustration just keeps piling up and EA leadership simply doesn’t care.

Maps, maps, maps…
This topic has already been brought up several times — and yeah, I wouldn’t say the maps are terrible, but they are really, really small and focused entirely on running and shooting with no sense of tactics whatsoever.

As for the bugs, I’m still patient for now. We’re only in the first season, and I know updates will come — bugs happen in every game at launch.
That said, I did expect a bit more polish for a 100€ title, but I can still understand it… for now.

To end on a more positive note — the graphics are absolutely beautiful. I just wish we could enjoy this amazing world with more freedom, playing the way players want to play, not the way we’re being forced to.

Please, developers — take a little time to listen to what players here on the forums are saying and what’s frustrating them. Otherwise, this could genuinely bury the whole franchise.

Thank you for your time.

That's not a server browser, that's a server filter. We want a true browser with dedicated official servers that show ping.

Hey there, what you’re mentioning isn’t really a proper server browser with rented servers and full XP progression. Not to mention the constant Portal outages where you couldn’t even create a server at all. Sure, things have calmed down a bit now, but it’s still not the same. Don’t you see the difference between — for example — BF3, BF4, BF1 servers and what we have in Portal now? And let’s not forget — even as a server admin in Portal, you’ve got zero control to switch teams, move players, or balance the game properly.

I don't understand the "there is no server browser" statement.

There is an option to search/matchmake game modes and levels you want to play from official battlefield hosted servers. I know that's not what you want, but it exists.

But there is also the option to search servers. You can type in keywords, tags, filters, and see a list of results to choose from.  Isn't that what you are after? Or what are you looking for?

Interesting take on that idea but I haven't played BR yet, so I couldn't say.

But since I'm a PvE player I'd like to attempt to try it out, if they ever make a "Casual" playlist for the BR mode.

  • It's clear to me that the focus has always been on the battle royal and not the classic BF experience. The BR map is great and while I don't like BR games it plays well. Weapons seem decently balanced and for those who like that kind of thing it seem like it's a good clone of warzone. HOWEVER, I don't want to play warzone. Sad to see but they clearly put their A team on the BR and their B team on the rest of the game and they are losing their core fan base because of it.

Yeah, I gotta admit — 2042 has come a long way, and I actually had some fun during the Free Pass before BF6 launched. But how long did it take them to get there? 4 years just to make the game somewhat playable. I’m afraid the devs don’t have that kind of time with this one.

After they revised the maps they really did improve 2042. Redacted is a close combat map but it is the most fun, especially to get grenade kills. BF 6 is no fun in its current state and I almost kind of dread playing it. I wonder if EA could do a BF 6 version of Redacted?

  • The maps are one of the reasons why it feels too fast and plays closer in speed to cod than to the BF of old. Things need to be more spread out on most of the maps so that there are more open battles in between zones. Most of these new maps don't even feel designed to well support large, armored vehicles either. Yes, there are battles in between zones right now but those battles are lightning quick and feel very CQB'ish in closed off smaller areas (cod) and not BF'ish (more open battle area needed for the encounters).

Some of the BF2042 maps are actually alot more fun/entertaining to play on, IMO. I can only hope they will bring back a bunch of old map remakes into Portal, from previous BF games.

Are the newer maps made to be more realistic in appearance? Yes, it would seem so. But that doesn't mean they will also play better. Realism doesn't usually equate to better gameplay itself. Although it does usually create a more immersive experience in general.

  • It’s really time to start addressing these issues while there’s still a chance to fix them — before players start leaving again. Personally, I kept telling myself that everything was fine, but deep down I just couldn’t admit that there are some very real problems with this game.
