Friend was given a 7 day ban, which changed to a permaban, on a first offense

Had a match where some guy was flaming his team, including us. Friend called him the not so nice term for "mentally disabled". There was a whole back and forth where the team was telling this guy to chill or just messing with him in very mild ways, and the guy said some pretty choice words back as well. Not pointing fingers at all, this is text chat shenanigans that im used to.

Initially he recieved a timed ban, so we all said "yeah whatever, probably shouldnt use nono words in text chat, thats on him" but then shortly afterwards his ban was upgraded to a permaban for his entire ea account. For a first offense this is an incredibly severe overstep, i have never seen this type of moderation overstep in an online game. Call of Duty isnt even this harsh, and you can barely say anything remotely abrasive there anymore. Hes filed two appeals, mostly for the purpose of saying "hey, ill take the timed ban but this permaban is a bit much" and both times hes gotten the "weve actioned this correctly, this matter is closed" response, and he is running out of ideas and options. Ive seen many other examples of this where people have been banned for saying "ez" or the dreaded f-bomb.

Im just looking for resources for him because hes all but given up at this point. Permaban on an (in my honest opinion) pretty moderate chat offense is ridiculous, especially when live chat and talking to an actual human is so buried in options for support that you cant find it without a guide.

(Edit for further context if anyone cares) As far as i can tell from his screenshots, no warning, and the timed ban and permaban change email were issued within hours of each other, all for the same chat message. This isnt a claim of repeated offenses leading to a justified ban. I can understand why some people will think thats what this is.

Also changed title to better reflect what happened.

Reminder to anyone hiring to not let Leiomy work the tos or ban enforcement team. 1-2 month ban on 1st offense, and on a chat offense, really isnt much better or different. Its an M-rated game for christs sake. Hearing or seing the aforementioned term he used or the "f**k" word shouldnt be anywhere as actionable as it has been, based on the startling amount of reddit and steam forum posts, some people even mentioning war or someones username get slapped with an un-appealable ban.

As for everyone else, this post isnt here to have anyone do anything anymore. This post is here to remind this entire forum, and its staff, that "i cant do anything/this sucks but it happens/maybe dont be mean blah blah blah" are p*ss poor excuses. If youre an employee, like EA_QueenBee, bring it up to SOMEONE that this mod system doesnt work, and overzealous people are taking advantage of it to temporarily or even permanently disable peoples ea accounts. If youre someone who likes ea or is just reading this post, criticize them for this stupid ai chat moderation, if not because of my friend, than have it be for the other people who literally have done nothing and are banned for "hateful conduct". This enforcement is dumb, and having an ai decide context and severity is even more dumb.

    Do better, EA.

  • I don’t think your friend has told the whole story.

"To be honest, the safest thing to do is just turn off voice chat and hide text chat, effectively disabling it. Doesn't matter that this is meant to be a Battlefield game."

    ---

Exactly -- I did that Day One.

I have played enough multiplayer online games and realized much of the chat is arguments or toxic comments fueled by the "safety" of anonymity.

Probably should keep your communications exclusively to your Friends List, I would say.

Your honest opinion is objectively wrong. This isnt a parasocial online friend. This is a guy ive known since middle school, frequently spend time with irl, and is an actual familial relative to me. Ive went over his emails and EAs responses. I have told and shown everything.

Since this thread is going nowhere good and the pertinent information on how to appeal bans has been provided I am going to lock this thread.
