Initial Feedback on S4: 5/10 Average - Needs More Tweaking.
There are some really nice ideas behind Tsuru Reef, but unfortunately some of its execution in relation to particular modes falls very short. (Subject to change as I continue to explore the season).
The good:
- The Aquatic design to squad uniforms.
- The new Squad being in the Battlepass.
- The new DMR is an interesting edition to the range we have currently.
- The dynamic waves.
- The large scale of the map.
- The continued squad design, giving soldiers their own backstories etc.
- The discord hunt the carrier activity was fun, but bigger rewards would be better, like a soldier skin.
The Bad:
- Matchmaking and Team Balance. It'll never be perfect, but rapid fire Steam Roller matches are fun for nobody, and waste xp boosters. Again, as always it's currently in an atrocious state.
- Breakthrough. This mode in this particular title isn't very fun in general and needs replacing with Frontlines, but the size and placement of objectives in Tsuru make for an extremely sour experience. If you're defending, it's not fun at all.
- The Battlepass. There needs to be less stickers, more focus on skins. There should ideally be two new squads per season included in the pass, alongside new outfits for existing soldiers.
- Map Design. I love the giant map in general, but I do think that when you're paired with a poor or incomplete squad, you end up getting scattered miles apart. The objectives don't necessarily promote teamwork.
- Battleship controls. I love how they interact with the waves, but all boats suffer badly from slow and clunky controls. I've beached myself or got stuck many times over, causing teammates to abandon ship having to swim miles to shore.
As of posting, for me the biggest problem right now is Breakthrough and Matchmaking/team balancing.
My first Tsuru match had a team containing some elite players of 800+ all paired up. Our team didn't have anyone over 300. It was a fast paced massacre, and it wastes everyone's time being steam rolled over. Ideally, the game needs more battles of attrition, a pull and push to keep everyone engaged.
Overall it's ok, but it's far from having that Battlefield 1 naval vibe with behemoth ships, and the Heligoland Bight and Portside battles. Those felt better designed and more extreme, whereas this still feels flat, unfortunately.
