I play on ps5 and for closed weapons it was almost not possible to get a match started because the server got not filled up.
My opinion?
Make the base weapons of each class open to all. Every weapon you have to unlock extra or just comes next in line should be locked to it's class.
I mostly play Assault but because i can use the m433 as a Engineer or Medic i tend to switch in-game to these classes when needed. This way i can support my team much more in different situations on the Battlefield.

Maybe that’s because in all their wisdom they decided that this shouldn’t be the default but rather an exception. So by default most people are just loading in conquest because they don’t know any better.
That doesn’t mean people prefer open over closed weapons. That also doesn’t mean open is better than closed. It’s just a practical result of a choice that was already made for us.
Quoting a gaming journalist: “it’s the gen-z solution. Everyone should be able to pick everything, if you can’t pick everything you don’t feel the full freedom, and if you don’t feel the full freedom, then you can’t fully enjoy our game.”
Having restrictions makes you think more about which class you should choose and which weapons come with that class. And the perks you get should also complement the weapons you get. playing engineer and being able to bring a sniper rifle is just stupid. Playing a recon and being able to bring an LMG…just as stupid.

They probably have cross-play off so that explains the servers aren't filling for them. Zero issues filling servers on the closed playlist.

And yeah I did not like the way they handled the naming conventions for the modes and on top of that closed got pushed further down the playlist options. Kind of annoying. Game plays WAY better with the defined class system.

I have no issue with an open weapon system. Played the beta for +20hours and had lots of fun.
I could call myself a veteran i played every Battlefield since bf1942 over 200-400h
If you play Battlefield as you should be playing it the open weapon system feels versatile. I can equip the gun im used to and help out my team as a support for a few minutes.
In the end i don't really care i will play it either way.

“Since 1942” makes you a veteran, but “200-400h” I’d consider ‘casual’ XD

The thing is, this game has to last 3 years at least. In the beginning it might seem fun, but when the cracks start to appear in the balancing, that’s where this issue will become really apparent. I guess we’ll see eventually, but if it becomes a problem, it will be too late to fix it.

Yes it’s laziness of people. Very noticeable in BF2042 as well. With crossplay off the only gamemode that would be populated or started quickly was the weekly event mode which was on top.
People who don’t understand the issue of for example a guy with a sniper being able to resupply himself, don’t understand balance.

Who cares that a sniper can resupply themselves?
- They'll probably die before having to get more ammo
- Map design has much bigger role in this issue. Cut sight lines across the map, which the urban maps do a good job of that.
- You can't grenade spam in BF6, which is great.
I challenge you to find one instance that allowing people to run whatever weapon they'd like to be a real issue. What scenario does that become a problem? I can't think of single one. People will choose what weapon they'd like to run before worrying about what class they're going to play.
The only thing I would maybe agree on, is limiting snipers and shotguns, but that's only because those are annoying to balance. Which Dice can if they want, but the community loses their minds with that stuff sometimes.
Balancing should be done through limiting kits, not through limiting primary weapons. A lot of issues are going to arise more so from the maps being too small and with players being able to spawn in big groups too quickly. I think that's what needs the most attention honestly.
