CFB 27 Has Fundamental Problems That EA and the Community Cannot Keep Ignoring
This is not simply an RTG complaint, a difficulty complaint, or a post written because I lost a game. College Football 27 has fundamental problems across gameplay, Road to Glory, Dynasty, roster accuracy, scheduling, coaching AI, and overall stability. Players may disagree about how frequently these problems happen or which difficulty provides the best experience, but the underlying issues are observable, repeatable, and being reported throughout the community.
I also want to be clear that I am not asking for easy games. I want highly competitive games. I do not enjoy running the score through the roof, winning every game by 40 points, or playing mindless football where nothing the opponent does matters. I want to read the defense, adjust protections, make good decisions, and lose because the other team played better.
What I also want is for the flow of the game and the final statistics to resemble a believable college football game if realism is what EA is trying to accomplish. Competitive does not have to mean every opponent suddenly performs at the same level regardless of ratings, roster strength, or matchup advantages.
If I am playing quarterback at Texas against UTSA, an individual UTSA defensive lineman can absolutely win a rep. UTSA can call an effective pressure, force turnovers, make the game competitive, or even win. That is college football. What should not happen is UTSA’s defensive line consistently overwhelming Texas’s offensive line, producing immediate pressure, and making the entire game feel as though the difference between the two rosters does not exist.
A highly rated offensive line should generally perform better than an overmatched defensive front. That does not mean it should be perfect, but ratings and personnel differences need to show up over the course of the game. If every opponent can generate the same pressure because the difficulty setting overrides those differences, then recruiting, player development, depth charts, scouting, and ratings lose much of their purpose.
I have never expected a video game to perfectly recreate real life, and I never will because that is not the point of playing a game. However, if EA is going to build the experience around “realistic” mechanics such as Wear and Tear, composure, fatigue, player abilities, route timing, pass protection adjustments, coaching decisions, and detailed defensive reactions, then the rest of the game needs to function at a level that supports those systems.
Right now, CFB 27 does not consistently feel realistic, challenging, or fun. It feels punishing. I play video games because I want to get on for an hour or two, enjoy college football, and relax. I primarily play single player modes because I enjoy a good challenge. I do not want to cheese the CPU, exploit broken plays, or lower the difficulty to Freshman just so everything works.
If higher difficulties are going to make the CPU so advanced that I need to scout opposing teams, study individual players, identify coverages, adjust protections, and understand every matchup before playing, then I expect a reasonable level of competence from the AI controlling my own team. My offensive line should understand its assignments, my receivers should attack the ball, my running back should be capable of navigating around his own blockers, and my coach should understand basic playcalling, clock management, and field goal decisions.
The user should not be expected to think like a real quarterback or coach while the AI teammates around him fail to perform the most basic parts of their jobs. Realism cannot apply only when it creates another obstacle for the player. If EA wants realistic difficulty, the entire team must function with a realistic level of awareness and competence.
Offensive Line Play, Pocket Formation, and Scrambling
Pass blocking is one of the most obvious problems in CFB 27. To be clear, I understand that not every unblocked defender represents broken AI. A defense can send more rushers than the offense has blockers, certain protections can intentionally leave a defender unblocked, and that player may become the quarterback’s hot read. I also understand that a three man rush can create pressure if an elite defender wins his matchup or the defense executes a stunt correctly.
That is not what I am talking about. Even when the offense has enough blockers to account for the pressure, centers, guards, tackles, and running backs can fail to recognize or pass off rushers. Defenders come through untouched without an obvious protection based reason while offensive linemen stand unoccupied, double team the wrong player, or block nobody. A defender winning with speed, power, leverage, or a pass rush move is football. An offensive lineman watching an accounted for defender run directly past him is an AI problem.
Protection adjustments do not fix every example because these failures are not always caused by the user identifying the wrong Mike or sliding the protection incorrectly. There are plays where the protection is reasonable, the offense has enough blockers, and someone still runs untouched through the line. Three man rushes also create immediate pressure far too frequently without a convincing pass rush win, sometimes while one or more offensive linemen remain unoccupied instead of helping.
The issue is also bigger than the tackles. All five offensive linemen contribute to the shape and integrity of a pocket. The tackles generally protect its edges and depth, while the guards and center maintain the interior and pass off pressure according to the protection. Simply arranging five linemen in something resembling an upside down U does not mean the game has created a functional pocket. The spacing has to make sense relative to the quarterback’s drop.
In CFB 27, the tackles can become far too wide, the guards can surrender immediate interior depth, and the center can fail to recognize pressure or provide help. The result is a quarterback who has nowhere to climb, reset, or escape. Sometimes there is technically a gap between the linemen, but the spacing and collision system make it impossible to move through it naturally.
This becomes even more noticeable when a roster that should have a major advantage up front is consistently overwhelmed by a weaker defensive line. Once again, a lower rated defender can win a rep and a smaller program can play a great game. That happens in real college football. But when a supposedly elite offensive line is being rushed and overwhelmed for an entire game by a defensive front it should generally control, the ratings are no longer producing believable matchup results.
That leads to the right trigger problem, which has been known throughout EA football games for years. Players have long understood that pressing the right trigger or R2 affects blocking engagements and can cause defenders to shed blocks faster. It has effectively operated as an anti turbo mechanic intended to stop users from holding sprint immediately, abusing blockers, or turning every mobile quarterback into an unstoppable scramble.
I understand why EA does not want users holding the right trigger from the snap and outrunning every defender. The problem is that this old solution has become a major issue in single player modes. When a legitimate escape lane develops and the quarterback presses the right trigger, which should create a burst based on his speed and acceleration, the offensive line can immediately disengage. Defenders then sack the quarterback, come through the line, or push blockers backward through the quarterback’s body.
A quarterback with high speed and acceleration should be able to recognize an actual opening and burst through it. The defense should stop him through containment, spies, pursuit angles, awareness, and tackling. It should not stop him because pressing the sprint button tells the game to end the blocking engagements around him. A mechanic created to prevent abuse has become a system that punishes normal football decisions.
Ball carriers also get stuck against the backs of their own offensive linemen. A gap may appear open, but the quarterback or running back cannot navigate through it because the collision and pathfinding do not allow the player to move naturally. When that combines with the right trigger disengagement mechanic, attempting to scramble through an opening can become more dangerous than simply standing still and taking the sack.
Pressure also seems to arrive in clusters. Instead of one defender winning one rep, the offense can suffer two or three consecutive blocking breakdowns that completely kill a drive. I cannot look at EA’s code and tell anyone whether that is situational tuning, momentum, difficulty balancing, or ordinary AI failure. I can only describe the pattern. Severe breakdowns repeatedly happen in clusters at moments that end drives. That is why so many players say the game feels scripted, whether literal scripting is happening or not.
Meanwhile, CPU controlled offensive lines can feel almost impenetrable. CPU quarterbacks regularly receive enough time to complete their progressions while the user’s offense struggles to handle basic pressure. Difficulty should make the CPU smarter and more capable. It should not make blocking logic operate under one standard for the CPU and another for the user.
Defensive Reactions and Receiver Ball Awareness
Defensive backs can anticipate routes in real football. They study formations, receiver splits, down and distance, route stems, tendencies, leverage, and the quarterback’s eyes. Pattern match coverage can also tell a defender how to respond to a particular route distribution. I understand all of that, but the defensive reactions in CFB 27 still go far beyond believable anticipation.
Defenders sometimes break before a receiver provides a visible route cue and react to throws with a level of speed and certainty that makes it appear as if the defensive AI knows the play call or user input. A defender does not always need to look directly at the ball because he can play through a receiver’s eyes and hands, but that does not explain every situation. There are plays where a defender turns, accelerates, or attacks the exact catch point without a believable visual or tactical cue.
Defenders also appear to receive a recovery boost once the pass is thrown. A receiver can create legitimate separation, but the defensive back suddenly closes the gap as soon as the throwing animation begins. Ratings, leverage, route running, speed, acceleration, and positioning should matter. A slower defensive back who has already lost leverage should not consistently recover just because the football is in the air.
The biggest issue is that receivers and defensive backs do not appear to operate under the same standard of ball awareness. Once a pass is thrown, the receiver should react to the football. That does not mean every receiver should randomly abandon his route or catch every contested pass, but completing the original route should no longer be more important than attempting to catch the ball.
Instead, receivers regularly remain locked into their route animations while defensive backs aggressively attack the football. They do not consistently work back toward the pass, adjust to its placement, protect their position, shield the defender, or compete at the catch point. On too many contested passes, the defensive back looks more like the intended receiver while the actual receiver watches the play happen.
This is made worse by unnecessary catch animations. Receivers jump for passes they could catch in stride, destroy their own momentum, and give defenders additional opportunities to make contact. They also drop too many catchable passes compared with the defensive AI’s ability to make difficult interceptions. If defenders can aggressively locate and attack the ball, receivers must be capable of doing the same.
Quarterback Accuracy, Play Action, and Screens
Quarterback accuracy can vary wildly without a clear football based explanation. Bad throws should happen, and ratings, pressure, fatigue, Wear and Tear, timing, footwork, throw type, and user input should all affect accuracy. The problem is when similar inputs under similar conditions produce dramatically different results.
Some passes sail far over open receivers, while others are thrown directly into the back of an offensive lineman even when the quarterback does not appear to be under meaningful pressure. Inaccuracy should be part of the game, but there should be an understandable reason for it. When the result has no identifiable connection to ratings, pressure, timing, mechanics, or user input, passing starts to feel random instead of skill based.
Play action passing is also close to unusable at times. I understand that a defense correctly diagnosing play action can create immediate pressure, and certain play action designs can leave an edge defender unblocked. That is different from the offensive line abandoning its assignments while the quarterback is locked into a long animation. The quarterback can be hit or sacked before completing, or sometimes even beginning, the fake handoff, and the user can technically cancel the animation but once again R2 issue comes into play, and a long play action or bootleg when the Oline doesn't lock down the edge players the long animation ruins any chance the QB has to get the ball off. It becomes hard to protect the ball, escape, or throw it away. The play is essentially over before control is returned to the player.
Running back screens have a similar problem. I understand that offensive linemen are supposed to release downfield on many screen designs and that the running back may initially sell protection before entering his route. The issue is not that the linemen release or that the defense occasionally diagnoses the screen. The issue is that the running back frequently runs directly into the back of a guard or tackle, becomes stuck, and never reaches the intended location.
That is not the defense defeating the screen. It is a collision or pathfinding failure. The quarterback is then forced to take a sack, throw the ball away, or make a dangerous pass because the intended receiver never becomes available. A play designed to punish aggressive pressure is instead destroyed because the running back cannot navigate around his own blockers.
Competitive Games Should Still Produce Believable Results
the user controlled AI needs to demonstrate a comparable level of awareness. The challenge should come from playing against a smart opponent, not from simultaneously fighting the opponent and the AI controlling your own team.
A competitive game should also produce believable statistics and flow. Keeping the score close should not require my quarterback to take 10 sacks, complete only 55 to 60 percent of his passes because every throw has to be released immediately, or absorb so many unavoidable hits that Wear and Tear destroys his ratings.
EA should be able to create competitive games through intelligent playcalling, matchup exploitation, adjustments, turnovers, field position, clock management, and execution. It should not need repeated blocking failures, impossible defensive reactions, excessive drops, or consecutive drive killing sacks to prevent the user from pulling away.
Personnel differences must still matter. A weaker team can play above its ratings, execute a great game plan, and pull off an upset. That unpredictability is part of what makes college football great. However, every opponent should not receive the same pass rush, coverage ability, and quarterback efficiency simply because the game needs to remain close. A close game created by intelligent football is exciting. A close game created by making the user’s teammates incompetent is frustrating.
Road to Glory Magnifies Every Problem
These problems affect multiple modes, but Road to Glory magnifies them because the player only controls one position. For context, I have played EA college football games on Heisman difficulty since NCAA Football 14, and I still play Dynasty on Heisman in CFB 27. This is not a case of someone selecting a difficulty beyond his ability and complaining because the game is hard.
Despite continuing to play Dynasty on Heisman, I have been forced to lower my quarterback Road to Glory difficulty all the way to Varsity just to make the mode reasonably playable. Even then, Varsity in QB RTG often feels closer to what All American used to feel like. If I can continue playing Dynasty on Heisman but have to lower QB RTG by two difficulty levels, the issue is not simply my understanding of the game. QB RTG is either balanced differently, or the lack of control over teammates magnifies every blocking, receiver, coaching, and Wear and Tear problem. Wear and Tear is a major problem, the season health bar when depleted keeps you from being able to recover even after 2-3 straight weeks of rest heading into the playoffs. Meaning all the work you put into your rating disappear when it matters the most.
Lowering the difficulty does not actually fix those problems. Linemen still ignore defenders, receivers still fail to attack the football, running backs still get stuck on screens, play action animations still leave the quarterback defenseless, and coaches still make irrational decisions. Varsity merely reduces the punishment enough to make some of it survivable.
An RTG quarterback cannot take control of the running back and prevent him from getting stuck behind a blocker. He cannot force a receiver to attack the football, personally correct every failed blocking assignment, or overrule every coaching decision. The result is a mode that can become a sack simulator.
I often have to choose between throwing before the route develops and accepting a 55 to 60 percent completion percentage, waiting for the route to develop and taking close to 10 sacks in a game, or attempting to scramble and watching the protection immediately disengage. Scrambling constantly then destroys the quarterback’s Wear and Tear, meaning the game punishes the player for contact created by its own blocking failures.
Wear and Tear should reflect accumulated physical stress, the severity of contact, player ratings, workload, and recovery. Instead, quarterbacks can suffer major penalties after a small number of unavoidable hits. A mechanic intended to create realism should not become another way to punish the player for broken blocking, forced animations, collision problems, or decisions made by AI teammates.
Coach Playcalling and Game Management
Road to Glory also depends heavily on coach AI, and the playcalling regularly fails to account for the score, time remaining, field position, down and distance, defensive look, or what has already happened in the game. Coaches can repeatedly call concepts that the blocking and pathfinding systems cannot execute, and the player has limited power to change them.
Timeout, clock management, and field goal decisions are especially frustrating. I have watched my coach go for it on fourth and three from approximately the opponent’s 25 yard line during the second quarter instead of attempting what would normally be around a 42 yard field goal. Unless there is extreme weather, an injured kicker, a desperate scoring situation, or some other obvious reason, take the points. It is the second quarter, not the final drive of the national championship.
There are also situations where the coach calls a timeout in scoring range and then fails to attempt a reasonable field goal, allows the clock to expire, or calls a play with little realistic chance of producing points. In RTG, the player cannot overrule those decisions. If I am expected to understand down and distance, clock management, field position, personnel, protections, and matchups, then the AI coach should understand them too.
Dynasty, Rosters, and Stability
Custom conferences still do not always produce logical or controllable schedules. Rivalries can remain permanently set as annual matchups even after the user moves the teams into different conferences. Arkansas and Missouri are one example. I understand that Arkansas and Missouri are a real rivalry and that keeping the game makes sense under the default SEC structure. The issue is that after the user completely changes the conferences, the game can continue forcing the matchup without allowing the user to decide whether it should remain protected.
Protected rivalries are useful, but the player should control which matchups remain annual after custom conference changes. There are also rivalry games occurring at questionable times and broader scheduling issues that do not properly reflect the new conference structure. Custom conferences cannot reach their potential if rivalry and scheduling rules remain fixed without enough user control.
The roster also contains basic factual errors. Quinten Joyner is one clear example. EA’s CFB 27 database lists him as No. 88 and a redshirt freshman, while Texas Tech’s official roster lists him as No. 0 and a senior. Mistakes can happen in a roster containing thousands of players, but obvious errors involving recognizable players should be caught before release or corrected quickly after being reported. Accurate player information is a major part of the value of a licensed college football game.
Stability is another major issue. I have personally become stuck on the postgame loading screen multiple times in Road to Glory. When that happens before the result saves, I am forced to close the game and replay the entire game. A full priced game should reliably save a completed game. Losing an hour of progress because the game cannot advance beyond a loading screen is not a minor visual glitch. It directly wastes the player’s time.
This Is Not About Making the Game Easy
Whenever these issues are raised, people respond by telling players to lower the difficulty, change sliders, adjust protection, identify the Mike, throw sooner, or “learn football.” None of those answers address the actual problems being described.
Sliders cannot make an offensive lineman attempt to block someone he completely ignores. Protection adjustments cannot fix an accounted for rusher being left untouched. Lowering the difficulty cannot create a functional pocket, fix a running back getting stuck behind his own blocker, make a receiver attack the football, correct a coach’s field goal decision, repair inaccurate roster information, or prevent a postgame loading screen from erasing a completed game.
Again, I have played on Heisman since NCAA Football 14 and still play Dynasty on Heisman today. Having to lower QB RTG to Varsity is evidence of how differently that mode plays, not evidence that I need to “get better.” I enjoy a challenge, and I do not want to exploit the game, run the same broken play repeatedly, or dominate every opponent without effort.
There is a difference between challenge and punishment. Challenge requires the player to make better decisions. Punishment removes control from the player and then penalizes him for what the AI did wrong. The community is not asking for guaranteed success. We are asking for believable outcomes based on ratings, positioning, assignments, decisions, and user input. Most importantly, the game needs to become fun again.
EA needs to address offensive line awareness, pocket formation, pass rush balance, right trigger blocking disengagement, ball carrier collision and pathfinding, defensive reactions, receiver ball awareness, unnecessary catch animations, quarterback accuracy, play action timing, running back screens, CPU completion percentages, RTG sack frequency, Wear and Tear balance, coach playcalling, field goal decisions, custom conference scheduling, protected rivalries, roster accuracy, postgame freezes, and the other stability problems being reported by the community.
EA Should Be Ashamed of Releasing the Game in This Condition
I genuinely do not understand how EA can look at the condition of College Football 27 and have pride in this release. This game was heavily marketed and hyped as a meaningful step forward. Players purchased it expecting EA to learn from College Football 25 and 26 and deliver a more complete and polished game. Instead, the community is once again documenting fundamental problems that should have been identified during development and testing.
EA should be ashamed that a full priced annual release has blocking logic this poor, receivers that do not properly attack the football, coaching decisions that make no situational sense, obvious roster errors, broken scheduling behavior, and freezes that force people to replay completed games. These are not tiny cosmetic issues hidden in some obscure part of the game. They affect the basic experience of playing football.
Adding uniforms, cosmetic content, Ultimate Team updates, and other surface level additions cannot continue taking priority over football gameplay and the major single player modes. Players should not be asked to wait for patches every year while EA collects full price at launch and carries the same foundational problems into the next game.
This frustration also goes far beyond College Football. FC players have been angry with EA for years. Madden players have been angry with EA for years. Now the College Football community is reaching the same point. Across multiple EA Sports franchises, players are becoming tired of annual releases, recurring problems, aggressive monetization, and the feeling that the company does not respect the people buying its games.
EA seems to believe these communities will complain, eventually calm down, and buy the next game anyway. That attitude has allowed the same problems to continue for years, but the anger is getting louder. The College Football community has been more vocal this year than ever before, and EA should not assume that player loyalty is unlimited.
A person can enjoy parts of CFB 27 while still acknowledging that the game was released in an unacceptable condition. Defending obvious AI failures does not help the game improve, and dismissing every complaint as a skill issue only gives EA permission to keep doing the same thing.
If you are experiencing these issues or other repeatable problems, add them to this thread and include the mode, platform, difficulty, play type, and photo and video evidence whenever and wherever possible. The purpose is to document the patterns clearly enough that EA cannot continue dismissing them as isolated incidents.
College football fans waited more than a decade for this series to return, and EA now has the privilege of producing the only fully licensed major college football simulation. That privilege should come with a much higher standard. The community sees these problems, the community is discussing them, and EA needs to acknowledge them, communicate clearly, and fix the foundational issues instead of expecting everyone to wait for another annual release.
EA should not be proud of College Football 27 in its current condition. It should be embarrassed that this is what it chose to release.
