Split Fiction: Graphics Error PC Steam

Using a friend's pass.   When starting the game it appears to be loading shaders and then it crashes with the following error:

LowLevelFatalError [File:D:\HazeAutomation\Main\Engine\Source\Runtime\D3D12RHI\Private\D3D12Util.cpp] [Line: 926]
Out of video memory trying to allocate a rendering resource

Things I've tried:

Cleared Steam Download Cache

Verified File Integrity

Updated Nvidia drivers

Windows 11

Intel 14900KF

RTX 4090

64GB RAM

QHD Monitor 2550 x 1440

  • Found a Fix for the issue

    • Go to Steam Library >> Right-click on the game >> Properties >> General >> Launch Options
    • Next, enter -dx11 and close the window. Then, relaunch the game.

If you try using -dx12 the game crashes, so it appears the game defaults to dx12.

Hey konadreamer01, just a little update on this.

Based on our testing, using the -dx11 launch config isn’t something we can fully recommend, as it may lead to performance issues, like heavy stuttering, later on. The reason it seems to have worked is likely that you've rebooted the game multiple times, allowing the shaders to compile and load fully, which could have fixed any issues from previous launch attempts.

After some research online, it seems that the following workaround might resolve your issue for good:

If your CPU is overclocked, try setting it back to the defaults. If you're not overclocked or that doesn't work, try installing Intel Extreme Tuning Utility: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/17881/intel-extreme-tuning-utility-intel-xtu.html and lowering your "Performance Core Ratio" from 57x to 54x*.

*Please note that lowering your "Performance Core Ratio" from 57x to 54x has worked well for users with a 14900K(F), but the optimal setting may vary depending on your system.

Here is a pretty good article around the hardware issue(s) if would like to know more: https://www.pcgamer.com/hardware/processors/intel-cpu-crashes-what-you-need-to-knowmicrocode-to-blame-but-fix-incoming-this-month-alongside-two-year-extended-warranty/

In my case, the whole PC freezes and crashes (no bsod, just reset after the freeze). The first freeze was after an hour playing the game. After that, the crashes came before even joining the game, just minutes in the menu. Temps are fine and it happens even after not playing for several hours. Shaders where recreated, updated GPU drivers and reset the ingame settings. I reinstalled my whole system today and even then, the crashes persist (2-3 minutes in menu), sometimes while creating shaders. I don't have this issue in any other game i play.

After switching to dx11 the problem seams to be fixed, but I have to play for a longer period to be sure.

Played for several hours and it didn't crash. I now got FPS problems in the splitscreen sections though (25-60 fps), that did not happen with dx12. CPU is sitting at 20% and GPU at 60%. When there is no splitscreen its fine maxed to the capped 120 which I set and GPU is up at 90-95%.

For me, verifying the integrity of my game files on steam and updating my graphics drivers fixed the issue.

Why is this marked as solved? It is only a bad workaround. As you mentioned dx11 has a massive performance impact on Split Fiction.

I tried a few things more, just to make sure the issue is not on my side:
    - uninstalled the game and downloaded via steam again
    - ran gpu memtest for about an hour (no errors)
    - ran Firestrike Extreme several times

GPU and CPU are more than fine (Custom Loop).
