Mass Effect: LE refuses to install

Hi there! So, here's the story! A while ago, I felt like playing Mass Effect Legendary Edition, which I had on Steam. So I installed it, tried to load it, which brought up the EA app obviously and... nothing. The game constantly refused to launch!! After trying a bunch of tricks I found online which didn't work, I just gave up.

Until, that is, the game turned out to be on sale. At this point, I made the choice to completely remove the game from my Steam library and re-buy it on the EA app. Unfortunately, even that doesn't work: Now, every time I try to just install the game, well, what happens is it stays in "preparing" mode for a couple of minutes, then I get an error message...

Again, I tried a few stuff I found online; clearing cache, uninstalling and reinstalling the EA app... it changes nothing. Also, it's the only game that has that problem: If, for example, I try to install Mass Effect Andromeda, it goes straight to it, no issue!

I guess, if that helps: When I do try to install the game, it does create a "Mass Effect Legendary Edition" folder in my Program Files. The folder is empty, but it exists.

So, yeah, that's my problem, and it's annoying. Sorry for the long text but I wanted to give as much details as I could. Anyone has a solution?

Well, I'm not gonna do that, and for a simple reason: I've got an update for y'all!

So, being tired of trying 200 hundreds stuff I wasn't even sure was gonna work, through messages back and forth, I decided to just go to my local Best Buy, have the tech guys there who know better than I do to look into it. So I brought my computer, they plugged it in, I started the download on the EA app... and it just worked!!! Not only that, now that I brought my computer back home (because I wasn't gonna just leave my computer at their store for the entire download), the download does continue!

Now, I have no idea what fixed it. Is it one of the many things we tried before? Was it just that my connection was so horrible that the EA app would just refuse to download, that it needed a little bit of a boost to kick-start the download? I have no idea if the game will play when the download is over, either. But that is for sure a happy development! :D

So... would having a terrible connection cause the problem we've been talking about since the beginning? That and the fact that the game is extremely big? Could that have been it all along?

Anyway... I hesitate at marking this as "Solved" yet; I'm gonna wait 'til this download is over if the game runs properly. And if it does I swear I ain't uninstalling it, ever!!!! :p lol And in the meantime, thanks for the both of you for the patience and all the help y'all provided! :)

EvaGolden No worries at all i get it. So basically I need to see what steps you did do vs what you didn't do.

So for the versions, You can own two - that isn't an issue. As for your EA account goes, all it would really do is say - okay cool, you are logging into the servers from Steam or the EA app - the launcher itself is only how you download the game. Not how you access those specific game servers.

I can take a look at the account again to see, but getting rid of the Steam version and all files off that PC is the first step.

Can you take a look at these three links? They are pretty self-explanatory on the steps, so nothing too crazy to worry about.

    System File Checker

    Reinstalling the Current Windows Version

    Fixing Blocked Programs

Hi! Sorry it took a while, got a bit busy for a couple of days. Anyway, about the three links you provided:

    - System File Checker: Managed to do that without an issue, got the "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them". So that's the good part!

    - Reinstalling the Current Windows Version: I couldn't do that one as described by the link you provided. From what I've read in the link, it would be because I have Windows 10, and you need at least Windows 11 to do what they describe there, something like that.

    - Fixing Blocked Programs: Well, I did download the troubleshooting thingy, and ran it. I couldn't run it based on the Mass Effect LE game, as it wasn't even on the list, so I ran it twice; first as the "not listed" option, then as the "EA App" option. In both instance it didn't found any issue.

I then tried to install the game from the EA App, but again to no success. Got the "There was a problem with your download - Something went wrong during the download. Give us a few minutes, then try again." error message.

You can preform a in-place Upgrade (repair installation) on Windows 10  as well.
This is normally a very safe process, but you should make a full backup of all your important data anyway (And not just before such on operation.)😉

    1. Go here to the Microsoft Windows 10 software download website.
    2. Click on "Download now" (Not on "Update Now"!)
    3. The "MediaCreationTool_22H2.exe" will be downloaded to your Device.
    4. Run the "MediaCreationTool_22H2.exe" either by the prompt you get after it finished downloading or by double clicking it.
    5. Accept license agreement.
    6. Select "Create Installation Media (USB flash drive, DVD or ISO file) for another PC
    7. Click "Next
    8. Make sure that the right language for you is set and that "Us the recommend options for this PC" is selected > Click "Next
    9. Choose "ISO file" > Click "Next.
    10. Choose a location on your PC to store the ISO file. (About 5GB space required) > Click "Next
    11. After the ISO download is complete right click the ISO file > Mount
    12. A new Explorer window will open > Run the "setup.exe" by double clicking it.
    13. Accept UAC prompt > Click "Next
    14. Accept license agreement again.
    15. After that setup should do some checks and in the end present you with this Window:
(Make sure "Keep personal files and apps" is present and checked!! If not abort the installation)

    16. Click Install
The in place upgrade will repair your current Windows installation and keep your files and apps.

Glad that the download worked now.
The only explanation imho is that something in your connection is the culprit, it still should not have happened through, seeing that Steam worked.
Let us know if the game runs.   👍

Well, hello again, and good news: The game is working just fine now! Everything's running smoothly!

Gonna be honest, I kinda wish we figured out what the problem was; after everything we tried, it's super-weird that using a computer store's wifi is all it took for things to work. I'm not even sure if that is really what worked here... :s But hey, not gonna complain! And I swear I ain't ever uninstalling that game, at least until I buy a new computer! :p lol

So, yeah, marking that visit as a solution! But also, I wanted to thank the both of you for all the effort you put into helping me out here! That was greatly appreciated! And if I ever run into other trouble with the EA app in the future, I know who to call! ;)

Anyway, I'm off to go play my favorite game ever now! Thanks again! :D

EvaGolden We don't have to mark it as solved until it is solved, and you can play with no issues! 👍

So, the main difference here is that it was done on a completely separate network (not a connection). What we refer to as connection is only your Internet download and upload speeds. So, if you were on a very slow or poor connection (speed), you may get errors, or it would take 300 hours to download, for example.

Your network - ISP/Modem/Router/Firewall/Anti-Virus, etc, is what causes your specific type of errors. Once you get it downloaded and launch it, you could play it off a simple WiFi connection if you really wanted to.

Once they hooked it up at Best Buy, they are on very high-speed business networks specifically to run a thousand connections at the same time.

Theoretically, you should have no issue other than some lag depending on your connection speed.

We can keep this open as long as you need it to be open. I will never mark it solved unless you the player say it has been fixed.
