[PC] Possible workarounds for Mass Effect Legendary Edition launch problems.

Worked.

The game crashes with a buffer overrun FAIL_FAST_FATAL_APP_EXIT_c0000409 exception.

That means the Windows kernel detects the buffer overrun and shuts down the application (the game) immediately due to security reasons.

The "ucrtbase.dll" mentioned here has nothing to do with the problem itself, and it is a complicated error because there is no indication where it comes from.

1. Preform a full virus and malware scan of your system.
2. If you did not do it until now, preform a clean boot , disable your virus scanner and other security software as well as Afterburner or similar software if you use them, and test the Game in clean boot mode.
3. Hit Windows key and X.
   Choose either “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Command prompt (Administrator),” whichever option is offered.
   Inside the PowerShell or CMD, enter “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Checkhealth” without quotes. > ENTER.
   If errors are found, notify us. If no errors were found reaped steps 1 & 2.
   Inside the PowerShell or CMD, enter “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” without quotes. > ENTER.
   The system will start validating soon. If it throws an error, please list it here.
   After it reaches 100%, hit Windows key and X again.
   Again, choose “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Command Prompt (Administrator)”
   Inside the PowerShell or CMD, enter “sfc /scannow” without quotes. >ENTER.
   Post the message you receive at the end of the processes here.

So the clean boot option worked,

It loaded the launcher, I selected the game and them I got a prompt asking for originclientservice to run, never had that prompt before, but after I clicked yes, the game worked. Now I need to figure out what is stopping it from working

Very weird I started enabling services again, 5 at a time, rebooting after each 5, all now active again and game still booting so it doesn't look like it was a service that was stopping it, or atleast if a service was, getting that origin prompt and allowing the first time was enough to not stop it again.

Might be worth mentioning, before I done a clean boot I did follow these two instructions

I'm unsure if those commands fixed the issue or if it was disabling all services and reenabling 5 at a time, either way the game is booting to the title screen now, I haven't had chance to properly try as it's 11.45pm here in the UK and I'm going to bed, I'll try playing tomorrow, never played Mass Effect before but I've heard amazing things so very eager to try it out.

It might very well be that the command fixed the problem, but for now all that counts is that you can play.

So i tried  Clean boot it didnt work i also try turn off my antivirus also didnt work.. Then i tried Commandprompt options no error was found. Only option I have left is to scan my PC for any virus but since every other game is working fine but ME legendary edition i dont think it will help.

You did turned the aniti-virus in clean boot mode of?

yes i did

I tried costum luncher it didnt work man i am just really unlucky.

So I tried /scannow command in cmd and i attached file with results of the scan it found some corrupted files and repaired them.

But it didnt help at all

As said, this is a nasty error.

• Press the Windows key and "X" at the same time.
• Choose "command prompt (Administrator)" or "Power shell (Administrator)"
• At the prompt, copy and paste "chkdsk x: /f /r" (Without the quotes, change x to the drive letter of the drive MELE is installed on.) > ENTER.
• Choose "Y" at the dialogue > Restart the machine.
• Here is a guide on how to find the Chkdsk log after you are back in Windows.
• Do the same with the system drive if the game is not installed on it.

You should also disconnect any hardware from your system that is not absolutely necessary and reboot.

Please filter the log in this way.

• Press the Windows key > Write "CMD" (Without the quotation marks) > Right click on "Command prompt" in the search results. > Run as administrator.

• Copy "findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt" (Without the quotation marks) into the prompt of the command prompt. > ENTER.

• Upload the "sfcdetails.txt" that is now on your desktop. 

findstr /c:[SR] %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt I tried this command but it wont open the file it says it cannot open the file plus it didn´t help

Yeah, that is the same error as in the Dump files.

Did you run Origin as Administrator?

• Press the Windows key and "i" at the same time.
• Select "Apps"
• In the list of applications search for "Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2015,  2017 or 2019.
  
• Tell me witch one is installed.

I also tried to lunch origin as administrator , it didnt help .

Repair the game.
(Origin > Game Library > right click MELE > Repair)
(Steam > right click at MELE > Properties > Local Files > Verify integrity of game cache.)

• Deinstall 2015, 2017 and 2019 from the Apps panel.
• Restart the PC.
• Go to your ">drive>:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Mass Effect Legendary Edition\__Installer\vc\vc2015\redist\" folder
• Run the "vc_redist.x86.exe" as administrator (right click the exe > Run as Administrator.)
• Run the "vc_redist.x64.exe" as administrator (right click the exe > Run as Administrator.)
• Restart the PC.
• Test.

Important: regardless of whether it works or not, after you tested, install the "x86: vc_redist.x86.exe" and the "x64: vc_redist.x86.exe" from this MS side.

If I understand you correctly the launcher does not start in normal mode, but does start in clean boot mode?

• In the new Window, type or copy and paste "%LOCALAPPDATA%\CrashDumps" (Without the quotation marks) > Press ENTER
• Look if there are any "MassEffect1.exe.Xxxx.dmp" or "MassEffectLauncher.exeXxxx.dmp" files in the "..Local\CrashDumps" folder.
• Zip 2 - 3 "MassEffect1.exe.Xxxx.dmp" or "MassEffectLauncher.exeXxxx.dmp" files together and upload them at a free file hosting service like Dropbox or Onedrive.
• Post the link here.

If there aren't any dump files of ME:

• Press the Windows key > Write: Command Prompt > Right click on "Command Prompt" in the search results > Run as administrator.
• Copy and paste reg add "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps\devenv.exe" /v DumpType /d 2 /t REG_DWORD into the prompt Window > Press ENTER.
• Play the game until it crashes.
• After the game crashes, let all Windows crash dialogues finish.
• Press the Windows key and "R" at the same time. > Type "%LOCALAPPDATA%\CrashDumps" (Without the quotation marks) into the new window > Press ENTER.
• Zip 2 - 3 "MassEffect1.exe.Xxxx.dmp" or "MassEffectLauncher.exeXxxx.dmp" files together and upload them at free file hosting service like Dropbox.

  If you want to undo the automatic dump creation, use the command below in a elevated command prompt (As in point 1) reg delete "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps" /f

I tried  with same results after lunching either  of the games it will get me back to menu to chose wich game i want to start.

Hi! I also have the issue with the game not work at all not even the launcher. 
Win 10 Mass effect is directly on the Origin. The patch didn't do anything.

I tried adding it to the firewall, fully disabling my antivirus and windows fire wall, I disabled Microsoft files protection thingy. I don't have the one drive protection.
I tried to launch exe of the launcher and the games itself as an administrator.
My machine is powerful however, the processors is old but still good. 

I also did some minor changes that I no longer remember. 

PS. I think you are God for helping everyone in the forum and I believe I speak for everyone. 

@GHoST_pl2 Perhaps try giving my custom launcher a shot. It has helped some people who couldn't get the original BioWare launcher to run on older CPUs. Also make sure to turn off 'run as admin' though after you've installed it, as explained in my post and here.

EDIT: I can see from your dxdiag that you do have a CPU that lacks AVX instruction support, so the custom launcher will likely be helpful.

I was skeptical at first as I didn't think that my processor  was that old (2011) just 10% slower then new Intel however, it did indeed work. I love you soo much man/woman/whatever pronoun you prefer. This game saved my life and now I can enjoy it again. Thank you soo much. I feel stupid for not trying it before. o7
