Thoughts on Mass Effect Andromeda multiplayer balance and UX issues.

So I'm about 70 hours into the game and something like 200+ hours (honestly can't say for sure) in ME3 and I would like to give feedback specifically on MEA multiplayer: user experience overall and balance.

From user experience (as in UX) perspective there is one major problem which is voice chat, namely, turned on by default. Almost everytime I join a lobby I hear a deafening screeching sound that would make a Reaper suicidal. Moreover, there are people who abuse the voice chat to specifically annoy their teammates. I've had an instance where one player was so mad about losing he just started screaming into his mic. This is horrible.

Also there are issues with menu navigation which is not intuitive and usable enough for PC at least.

Post-game screen fails to highlight the amount of XP and money I've got and what goes into this. ME3 had a way better user experience in that regard.

And now for multiplayer balance.

My opponents are unfairly stronger than me.

AI knows exactly where I am at the moment and goes there. It is very hard to carry a mission when your team is down. When I happened to solo bronze I ended up in melee with wraiths going at me one by one.

My guns suck.

There is no point of acquiring new guns except several that are proven good, like vanquisher for example, because new gun does not provide you nor significantly better performance neither completely different mechanic or playstyle. Silver items are not very distinguishable from bronze ones and sometimes even gold are not any better than silver or even bronze. It's actually better to melee enemies. As for the playstyle I really liked the Disciple in ME3 because it was light and powerful enough to be silver-worthy. In MEA shotguns are just trash and majority of snipers rifles are trash as well.

Enemies are too fast.

They are way faster than in ME3 and move chaotically and more unpredictably. Combined with their ability to withstand long fire it makes them coming to your position faster than you can deal with them. Dog-mobs and breachers help a lot with this because you don't kill them after you shake off their grab attack as it was with the husks, and they are harder to kill than husks. Breachers even can go suicidal and fly onto you with a speed of light. You can dodge if you are in the open space, but very often you are not.

Certain enemies are just annoyng.

Berserkers spam flak. Beast is unstoppable and sync kills you almost right away. Exalted is hard to kill because his orb is visible only half of the time and even if you manage to take it down it's being restored quickly. Also very fast sync kills. I've seen aoe marker but usually I'm being sync killed just a second after this guy gets close. Enemies tend to swarm around your position making it hard to complete download objective (three points), especially against Kett. You end up overrun, trying to get away only to get overrun again.

Having said all of the above I would decribe my experience with all three factions.

1. Outlaws:

One of the most "balanced" factions. Adhi are quite an annoyance but most of the enemies seem fair except Berserkers which flak spam is infuriating.

2. Remnants:

Fairly balanced, though there are some flaws

- Breachers in suicide mode are way too fast. I haven't seen a person which was able to shoot it down. It is only possible to evade the damage but not the case for closed quarters with no available room.

- Observers hit very hard on silver and are quite hard to kill with these nerf guns we have. Even nullifiers are easier because you can actually avoid their shots, it's almost impossible to avoid observer beam

3. Kett:

The most overpovered of all three factions.

- Destined are impossible to see in stealth (in ME3 you could have seen stealthed enemies). Also it's impossible to turn them out of stealth as well as wraiths. Perhaps I miss on that point but I feel the difference from ME3 in that regard.

- Kett bosses are very hard to take down. Beast moves just too fast, it's very hard to run away from. Exalted is OP because his orb is seen only half of the time and sometimes it jumps because of poor connection. After the orb is taken down it restores pretty fast which makes you focus on him for too long.

As for difficulties, bronze is way harder than it was in ME3 and Silver is not harder than silver in ME3 but feels more like unfair. It is hard but because you can't really do anything significant.

If I had to pick a word to describe my experience from playing I would pick "struggle". I'm struggling despite having all basic weapons maxed to X, having Widow, Isharay and Talon pistol. I'm not a super-pro player soloing gold but in ME3 I could confront my foes in silver, doing damage, helping my team. We could finish silver match in less than 18 minutes (perhaps even make it in 15). I would shoot well, use my abilities properly, perform at 100% and win. Now I would perform at 150% and still lose.

Multiplayer is still not horrible or unplayable. It is unsatisfactory. Bronze is too difficult for a 10k credits for the win. Same goes for silver. I used to play ME3 multiplayer as a way to rest but now I have to rest from playing

eh spending 400k and getting nothing but blue cards is still kind of a kick to the nuts.. particularly when every now and then ill proc a weapon part V (meaning there are still those in the pool). i play ALOT and i only get about 2 n7 cards a day (@11k apex).

If you buy the 50k/100k packs right away that's the most inefficient way you can possible go. Buy the 5k packs till you got all commons, then buy 20k packs until uncommons are complete, and so on. I started this way and after maxing out all common characters i got a weapon/mod in every pack until all commons where maxed out. Now working on uncommon. You do get the odd rare every so often even in the lower packs.
  • Yeah, that's how it worked in ME3MP too, cheap packs til you get nothing but supplies from them, then progress on to the next rank of pack and keep rolling like that til you're at the 50k ones - there are tonnes of weapon mods in each category too which is kind of lame when you're chasing a weapon or UR character

  • The OP raised some points that seem to be shared across the web. Some thoughts on all of this:

    1. If enemies are stronger than you- pick the right kit. Sounds obvious, but engineer does better against synthetics than against organic. (Just saying)

    2. Know the mechanics of priming and detonation. A biotic throw can detonate the flamethrower attack of a Krogan Merc (for example)

    3. Probably should cooperate as a team and let others know your plans so you can make this easier. That's what the headset is for, not for complaining you don't have a Thonkin X.

    4. It takes time to unlock stuff. This "I've been playing for 2 weeks and don't have all the characters/ weapons/ gear" thing is just hilarious. Even mainstream game reviewers think this is a thing. It is not.

    5. The RNG is your master, and you will need to work with it. The RNG decides who gets a Krogan and who gets a Salarian. (... at least I haven't unlocked 16 Volus adepts in the last 20 packs)

I was surprised how easy 'Unwavering' was on this game. Didn't expect to be doing Gold matches in 14 minutes so soon. BUT that was more the team I fell in with on those PUGs. It is the TEAM who wins the match. 5 Gold extractions is several orders of magnitude easier than a SP insanity run.

If we must compare to ME3 MP; in those days it took 600-800 hours to unlock all the goodies, and another 400-600 hours to level it all up. I remember chatter (almost 5 years ago) on BSN boards about how ME3 bronze was impossible to solo. So if it's hard- good. You can practice.

If you find Beserkers annoying or Nullifiers frightening etc... etc... you need to figure out how to take them down. IMHO gold on Andromeda is easier than ME3 gold, but you need a good set of teammates. Level 1 Adepts with a Predator shouldn't be playing gold. If it's too hard you need to play more and think about HOW you play. This game does require thought in combat. It is also a CO-OP game. Some people work well with a team, those are the ones you want.

If you must compare to ME3 - the MP was unique in the type of player it attracted. Someone who would (for example) play a volus engineer and know that they would score at the bottom of the list; but their shield boost would save the eggshell thin Drell with the  BWX who was sniping the Brutes. Score means nothing in ME3 (well it means something, but not what you think).

Having said all of that, I do think a Crusader II with Cryo I on a Krogan Merc with weapons training would  one shot a Bronze mook. It currently does not - so maybe a Crusader buff is due

Got the N7 Valkyrie today, thinking maybe MAYBE one of the ar's would be worth using since it is the literal n7 rating ultra rare and it is also complete and utter garbage. I was struggling to kill breachers! I did a gold with my havoc X with as much weapon buffs as possible (barrel IX. reciever) and it still took a literal century to down anything WITH TURBOCHARGE. That's +19% damage from the barrel, from turbocharge +35% damage, 40% rate of fire. another 18% damage from havoc passives among a long list of others....ALONE 72% base DAMAGE!....... Yes, it is a level 1, but you'd think it would do more than that I mean comon. It is so weak I feel like it would struggle in bronze! A burst fire AR you'd think should have strong burst... My god ar's are broken right now.  I mean I still scored over 18k points on top, but my god it was a pain in the rear. I had to use turbocharge on cooldown to kill even assemblers.

Agreed, I've spent 25 hours in multiplayer, have over 25 weapons unlocked. Have a couple characters maxed at level 20 with a the rest sitting between level 1 and 15. And I find when I try another weapon in a category, I just come in last place. There is no benefit to trying a new weaker weapon when the best weapon I have unlocked does all the killing for me and helps me get higher XP faster.
Sure there are combinations of characters with abilites that I can equip to make a weapon perform better, but it still does not compete with my most powerful gun. As a result I get bored using the same gun over and over on different characters. So I switch out to something that looks better. But here I am coming in last, getting less XP, which means I have to play more, longer to unlock new things.
Its annoying, I feel that ME3 had it right and I'm not enjoying MEA multiplayer. Compare my 120 hours I put into ME3 online to my 25 I've put into MEA and I'm not interested in continuing. ☹️

    illequine,
I haven't seen the video you posted, but I think you are confusing a bug with a cheat. I had one game where the game decided to give me 98 sniper bullets and firing the rifle did not require reloading. Additionally, I did not take any damage no matter how many shots were fired at me. It was glorious... XD

Unfortunately it has only happened to me once, hehe. And I can assure you I do not use any cheats or hacks, I don't even know if they exist for ME:A.
