Cannot be captain

Got a trusted level with management and teammates. Won the cup. Got a 19 million dollar contract.  Next season the game changed my jersey number, randomly, and the option never appeared to become captain before, during or after pre-season. Just got the new update. Went back to previous save that was after the cup win and went through the whole pre-season and first couple of games again.  No option for captain.
